Bill Fennelly

It will probably play out that way although I doubt any rotation players portal.

Regardless, he isn’t getting fired and will leave on his terms but that doesn’t mean he dictates who replaces him.
So, another year of wasted talent? Good, something to look forward to !

I wouldn’t blame any of those girls for leaving right now
If I'm Kenzie Hare, why would I stay? This staff has done nothing to enhance her game. I feel bad that her role is simply "stand on the wing and watch Bill's three favorite players try and maneuver the opposing team and lob it to Audi for the 79th turnover of the game"

He’s only a legend because nobody else ever wanted him and he never left. Mediocre longevity does not equal being a good coach.
I mean he also comes from a background of coaching where you stay loyal to your program. I think it's disingenuous to say he's NOT a good coach from a holistic point of view. I mean he is responsible for getting Iowa State WBB even somewhat on the map and his name is tied to every single Iowa State WBB NCAA Tournament appearance in school history.

With all of that being said, it's time for him to hang it up and I really hope he does some reflecting and acknowledge he's had a good run at it but it's time.

At this point, get BF to retire & give it to Billy if he can retain players for next year.
What has Billy done to be given the keys to a fairly well respected D1 program? Being his dad's assistant? Bring Steven in as recruiting coordinator? Hell if we are taking a in house flyer give it to E. Ryan for $200,000 a yr. Let her spend the staff money on experienced assistants.
Not saying Billy may not be a good coach, but we have no reason to say either way.

I think it speaks volumes that BF's entire staff has NOT moved on....EVER. No one has been targeted for other coaching positions nor do I get the impression they ever wanted to test the waters and spread their wings a bit.

I feel as though our assistants on this team bring virtually nothing to the table. It's either that or whatever they do bring to the table is shot down by BF but I'd wager on the former.

Had to double check but Robin Pingeton currently at Wi (I thought she was still at Missouri) was at ISU 2000-2003 as a assistant and assistant head coach. but Jody and LaToya have never left.

Heather Ezell (former guard) out at Wyoming is 72-54 career head coaching record with Wyoming being her 1st job. 3 pretty good yrs then 9-16 this yr no idea what happened this yr.

So that's a lot of words to say who knows, it's all way above my paygrade. This Jr class just had so much potential as freshman I feel bad that they are having a hard time achieving it.

You would be incorrect. Let’s start with Brenda Frese. Then we go to Katie Abrahamson. And Robin Pingeton.

The thing is, when you really look back at it, Fennelly’s program peaked in the early/mid 2000s… or 20-25 years ago. I’m not saying there haven’t been highs since then, but that was when ISU WBB was at its best, and at the time we were hoping the program would take the next step… and not only did it never take that next step, it never quite got back to that point either. I understand the argument that he built ISU WBB… but that was 30+ years ago, with most of the accomplishments coming more than 20 years ago now. And the last 5-10 years have been really disappointing, especially considering the talent that has been on the team over that time.

Bottom line is Fennelly is going to have his banner in the rafters next to Johnny Orr, because he’s earned that. He’s the guy that took a program that was less than nothing and turned it into something good, and consistently good… but good is for the most part where it capped out at, because he very rarely ever approached great, even if some of his teams should have allowed to get to great.

If Bill stays and retires after next year, this program is in for a major reset. Bill has built this roster so he can go out in a blaze of glory with almost the entire team being juniors. It is frustrating that these seasons have been disappointing knowing this team will be decimated after next year.

I mean, your not wrong, but most of those were 20 years ago…..20 years. Last time I remember any changes were the bald guy getting let go. Thst had to be at least 10 years ago. I think it’s fair to say that the staff is pretty comfortable and that’s generally not the way to move any program forward.

I’m guessing if something did happen with Bill (and I don’t think it will), any potential new coach would take a pass on any coaching holder overs ( other than maybe Ryan).

You might of considered holding your thoughts on this one. So 23 years ago is the most recent one I believe u listed to leave and your dieing on that hill. The point of the post was on target.

That is the scary part here that I think so many miss. Bill is likely going to be coaching the Iowa State Women next season, in the event he retires following next season you're left with a full rebuild.

Unfortunately you're going to have to probably go get a home run hire. Brenda Frese is a good start, can you get her out of Maryland though?

Brenda makes $1.88 million vs $860 thousand for Bill.

And the game has changed so much since then from a physicality and athleticism stand point that type of players from that era that worked don't work in today's game against the elite programs.

The sad part is, with all that talent will never see the heights promised due to the coach not changing or adapting. His blaze with burn the bridges…. If he wants to go out, retiring now and giving the young women a chance to adapt and change for the future.
