***2026-27 Mens College Basketball Thread***

I think it’s because they have minimal talent? But they also haven’t beaten anyone really good outside of flailing Nebraska team.

“Great” coaches don’t lose to the 13th, 17th and 18th place teams in the conference.

Aren't they basically Drake from the last two years that have played together?

That is what makes McCollum impressive tbh. Not much money to work with and still keeps it close with a crazy talented Michigan squad.
This is kinda what I was getting at. I don’t want to see him with anymore talent than he has right now. Replacing Stirtz will be about near impossible for next year.

Not really. That squad is about as experienced in that system as humanly possible. Everyone should have absolutely expected them to have success in year 1. Barely ANY teams can match that continuity and familiarity.

Eh - he does have a likely top 20 or so player for this coming NBA draft. To say Iowa lacks talent is a bit of a stretch

I never said Iowa lacks talent, though. I said they lack money.

I said Michigan has talented squad. Stirtz is who he is, but Michigan has more money and more talent top to bottom. I don't think anyone in America would say Iowa is close to Michigan on talent.

But it's CBB, coaching, scheme, effort, etc. can be used to close a talent gap.

Sparty got up 19 on Rutgers and went into FAFO mode while Rutgers kept playing to have a 2 point lead with 3 seconds left.

I'd take Manyawu and Banks on this year's ISU team. And Stirtz of course. Leave the rest out in the cold.

Why?

I think you're buying into the eastern Iowa local media hype.

Decent is likely their ceiling and that's not a scary thing.
