Chicago Bears bought Arlington Heights track only to build in Indiana?

I’d be curious how many fans the bears would loose with them making this move to Indiana.
The same number as the Chiefs will lose moving to Kansas. People that don't like the decision will say they are out, but 5 or 6 years later when the new stadium opens, they will still be there.

This is the equivalent of the moving to Canada crowd after their preferred candidate loses an election.

Seriously the NFL should step in if the Bears actually think Indiana is realistic. Just more idiotic rich people with no idea how most people live.

Indiana is offering such a better deal to the Bears. Why would the nfl step in and tell them you’re better off dealing with Chicago and Illinois politics when u can get a way better deal in Indiana? That would be unAmerican

You can't constantly **** on fans and expect them to continue to show up. This wouldn't be moving to another area of a city. This is basically moving from KC to Topeka. I just don't get how this would be successful. I think sports in the US are hitting the breaking point in popularity. College sports is showing a complete breakdown in what has made it great. Baseball has been dropping for years. The NBA is starting to see a drop in popularity. Yeah the NFL is still king for US sports, but that doesn't mean it can just do whatever it wants.

I guess we’ll see, but those fans absolutely love the Bears. I can’t see them stopping liking the Bears because they moved to Hammond. They certainly aren’t going to become Green Bay fans. If anything, it opens the door for Reinsdorf to make what would be a savvy move in my opinion…and move the White Sox to Hammond as well. The Sox suffer from a serious little brother complex. They would benefit from a new stadium and giving the state of Indiana a reason to make them their team…while still keeping the current fanbase (again, no way a Sox fan becomes a Cub fan).

Not really. NW indiana is definitely Chicagoland. And the NFL doesn’t give two ***** if one of their franchises is getting a tax payer stadium out of the deal.

I don’t think that’s a fair comparison, because they’re still moving within the Chicago area.

If you base it on distance from Chicago’s city hall (Halas Hall vs. Hammond, Indiana), they are actually moving closer to Chicago by moving to Hammond.

This isn't that weird. Giants and Jets play in New Jersey (i think). Chiefs just moved to Kansas which is on the significantly smaller side of KC. I don't think the states should be paying for these stadiums, the owners should but if they are willing to pay, why wouldn't you accept the money? I live in kc and missourians were mad that we lost the chiefs to kansas. However, once Kansas won them, they started having second thoughts about the financial burden and if it was worth the reward. Owners threaten to leave without help, I would say let them leave. Chicago fans win. They get to keep their team and not pay for the stadium.

I'm not an expert on the topic, but what does indiana gain? When they host a superbowl, all the people will be in illinois/chicago for hotels and to spend their money.

I grew up in the burbs, but haven't lived in the are for nearly 4 decades. I'm trying to grasp the villain here. Is it the Bears organization, or the city of Chicago?

I'm not sure there is a villian. Everyone is just doing what they think is best here. I am a bears fan. I don't like that they aren't in "chicago" but ultimately it changes nothing for me.

Depending on where it is built, it could be several hundred feet outside of Chicago city limits in Hammond. It's a bad look for Illinois politicians but actually closer to the Chicago downtown than Arlington Heights would have been. People are losing their minds over an invisible, imaginary state line that turned into billions of dollars of investment assistance to secure the deal. Of course the Bears are taking it.

Bragging rights over Illinois.

Bank of America did a recent study that showed that credit and debit card spending in the zip code of an NFL stadium increases 75 plus percent on game day weekends compared to non-gameday weekends. Indiana cannot revitalize the lost manufacturing areas in the northwest without generating some revenue, they have to start somewhere. 9 gameday weekends a year probably isn't enough, which is why so many new stadiums are associated with large development zones now.

That's great, but there's been several studies showing that stadiums aren't great returns on the investment by the state and local areas. Indiana should just give all that money to the area to cleanup and revitalize instead of giving a subsidy to an NFL franchise that may bolt for another area in 20-25 years.

Perhaps but a ROI discussion doesn't get anyone elected.

Indiana has spent multiple billions over the last 50 years to revitalize and it has not been able to overcome the gravity of the broken windows theory coming in to play in that area. This is a big gamble, for sure. But you have to have something to draw outside commercial property investment toward when they would otherwise look elsewhere. Do these things always pay off? Not even close. But some have seen good enough results that the deals keep happening. And let's face it, Indiana has the budget surplus and cash reserves to make this much less controversial a play in state government than Illinois.

You can be a villain even if what you’re doing is completely understandable. It’s not anywhere close to the worst thing an NFL team has done, but I think it’s fair to dislike what the bears are doing here.

Also, apparently the Bears had been meeting with the Illinois Assembly and asked them to pause the meeting so a few changes could be made to the bill. They then later that day or early the next morning issued the statement about Indiana. I can understand being pissed about that.

I don't get all the sudden panic from Bears fans. It's been headed this way for at least four months. Besides, Cody Parkey has hurt us all more than moving the stadium to Indiana ever will.

Gary, Indiana was the saddest place in America I’ve ever been to. Understand this is in Hammond, but all of NW Indiana needs a boost.

The threshold to a good ROI here is likely much lower than other areas where stadiums are built, because you’re starting from a point that’s close to a developing country.

Lake County, Indiana, is one of the most polluted and economically depleted areas in the Great Lakes region. The fact that the bears are moving to this toxic wasteland is hilarious. This is like a billionaire building a mansion in the worst part of town to avoid paying taxes. As a Packers fan, I am here for it!
