***2026 Winter Olympics (Milano Cortina) Thread***

I should have been a speed skater. These American male speed skaters disappoint me with their results.

We need another Apollo Ohno

She said Vonn shouldn't have tried it because it she could have seriously hurt herself and it sends the wrong message to kids (to compete at all costs). I told her its her choice and her body so she can put it on the line. And it sends the right message to kids, too many athletes sit out for minor crap, she showed that her love of the sport is bigger than an ACL injury. We need more of that.

I had a similar discussion with my wife last night. She thought it wasn’t worth the risk of serious long term damage. I don’t disagree but I can understand anyone at that level almost having to take their last opportunity to compete at that level. They are built different mentally. And obviously physically. You have to obsessive to be one of the absolute best in the world at anything.

It is Vonn's last chance at the Olympics, so from that perspective she made the right choice.

I don't know how the eligibility/participation rules work for Olympic skiing, but if the alternative was to send another athlete, I'd be pretty pissed if I was that other athlete. Most athletes don't get many shots at the Olympics. Sending an over-the-hill skier with name recognition but a joint replacement in one knee and no ACL in the other knee had pretty low odds of success. Made for good story/drama/TV ratings though.

Agreed. The next skier up should have had a chance to be on the team. Best case scenario, Vonn wins and sets an example that it's good to play through pain, and you're a hero if you let your sport be more important than your health, and young athletes all over get the wrong message and suffer more debilitating injuries for years.

With what happened, hopefully it's a lesson of why you don't do that. She's not a hero for trying. She selfish for not allowing another skier with two working knees to compete.

How many 40+ aged athletes are competing at the Olympics? I can't speak for any one person, but I'd think you'd have to know when to fold them, as Kenny Rogers would say. Also, could it be that some people are not so much obsessed with their sport as they are with being in the limelight--especially those who have previously had great success in their sport?

The next up athlete should have done better and actually qualified.

That's why I said "I don't know the eligibility/participation rules". Maybe there were no other options. I'm guessing you don't know either.

I was thinking this earlier today. Since it’s a speed type event, so long you make the qualifying time, can’t a country send as many athletes it wants? But again, I’m not sure how qualifying works for each event.

It’s not as though the situation is unprecedented. As a skier, Vonn is no stranger to this type of injury. She tore her ACL in her right knee and unknowingly raced on it in December 2013, a situation that ultimately caused her to miss the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. Italian skier Sofia Goggia won silver in the 2022 Winter Olympics just three weeks after partially tearing her ACL. Downhill skier Breezy Johnson tore her ACL in 2018.

Her pole caught the gate, which turned her a little sideways in the air, which at that speed you see what happens... It wasn't a result of her ACL. The slighest clip or bump at 50/60/60/70 mph to cause a bad yard sale. If you're in the air like she was, physics is unforgiving. The downhill is insane.

she earned the right to compete. It was her choice to make
