Bill Fennelly

Everybody should just treat him like garbage. Put a "For Sale" sign in his yard. Egg his car. Maybe even a flaming bag of dog **** on his porch. He'll get sick of it eventually and just quit. Problem solved.
Until he shows you he’s got a garage full of Dr Pepper, that seems to shut down the hot seat immediately. And the billboards.

I don't know what all of the fuss is about. The next ISU WBB coach is already in Ames.

I haven't read the whole thread but everyone is focusing on Billy. What if Bill's play is actually for Steven - the son that has actually done what everyone is saying Billy should do - go out and coach somewhere else. He has coached at ISU, Cal State Fullerton, Idaho State, and is currently at UNI. But I would be nearly as disappointed in him as Billy since he had zero head coaching experience at any level.

What kind of system would people prefer from the next coach? Defense like Otz, or wide open like Fred? Or just win!
I think it's clear from our MBB team that our fan base appreciates high effort, tough defense style of play. Even if we're not lighting the world on fire offensively, a team that is tough to play no matter what their talent level is one that fits the culture of ISU, in my opinion.

The lack of rebounding, lack of defensive effort, and no-motion offense are all tough to watch, even when we're winning.

I would hate it only slightly less than Billy. My fear with Billy or Steven or anyone else on the staff is that they would keep these assistant coaches around.

HS recruiting has been neutered by the style of play and current players we have.

If you are a HS post, you're not getting many minutes behind Crooks and Brown. And if you are a guard, you're basically feeding those two, while sitting in the corner of a stagnant offense.
Given the quality transfer additions of Jada W and Hare the past couple of seasons, you're off your rocker here despite the recent struggles of both.

I'd argue that Hare has been a disappointment since coming to Iowa State. Williams a pleasant surprise.

But the rest of the recruiting misses by BF and staff have been frequent and noticeable.

Steven left the coaching profession a few years ago - I see him and his family at a lot of ISU games.

Thinks it's a combo of both. The last few HS classes are bigly impacted by the fact we have a hundred juniors (same as sophomores last year). The old coach likely to retire is impacting 2026, 2027, 2028 HS recruiting.

The uncertainty of who will coach after 2027 for sure plays into it for HS recruiting. After 2027 you'd have no idea (probably) for who the coach will be, what the system will be or who your teammates will be. The combo of current players, current style plus the uncertain future is a HS class recruiting killer. If Fennelly was younger you might be be able to anticipate a great incoming "replacement" class like we had in 2020.

The gal that could have thrived in this system pre-Crooks would have been the Husker guard Prince. Would have been great here as the third scorer even int he Crooks system but I can see why she's a Husker and not a Cyclone. Not a lot of stars, or stars in the making, want to play third option.

The fact that Billy didnt look for a head job makes me think the deal is done. If he really wants the job, but JP insisted he get HC experience, he’d have done it. He knows it’s a great gig, and I don’t think he wants out of coaching when daddy retires, so why not cut your teeth and come back when he retires? Probably because he doesn’t have to.
Billy interviewed at Drake when they promoted Pohlman. How do you know he isn't looking or interviewed?

He left coaching 3 or 4 years ago and works in marketing for an insurance company

Do we think his seat is warm? Is he our Kirk Ferentz of WBB?
What I don't understand is Bill's teams have one or two major injuries a year without fail. I don't see that happening a regularly to other programs. Perhaps I am imagining things but that is my perception anyway.

Not at all related to your question.

No, he should stay until he wants to leave.

If Billy is the successor (and I doubt he is), then he should be named HC in waiting ASAP because 2026 and 2027 HS recruiting has been neutered due to Bill’s imminent retirement. Am aware of at least one 2026 P5 level HS recruit lost who wanted to play at ISU but committed elsewhere due to the current situation.
just a question did they want to play at ISU or play for BF?

Just one man's opinion. Billy is a 100% nepo hire who doesn't do jack ****.

There was a rumor a couple years ago that Bill had discussed retiring but wanted Jamie's commitment that Billy would succeed him. As the story goes, that conversation did not go well. But ya know, lots of unfounded rumors in these parts, particularly lately, so who knows?
As I understand it, Billy has taken over team defense and it’s waaaay better than it’s ever been.

Way better is a bit much. It was looking better at the end of noncon, but it has not been fantastic during conference season.

It does hurt to loose your top defender and best rebounder though.
