*** Official #2 IOWA STATE vs Kansas Game(Day) Thread ***

The defensive effort all game is maddening
I don't think that was the issue. Maybe our guys did not do a good job of staying in front of the dribbler, but it was more schematic that was the issue last night. Bill was ready for TJs defense, they rotated the ball really fast out of the double teams and they did good job of changing direction when the ISU defender was trying to recover to cover the spot. Left all kinds of open looks and wide open lanes to the basket.

I do grow tired of all the usual excuses.

• "[opponent] was desperate and really needed this win" We didn't? Would have been a big one.
• "[opponent] was really fired up" See above.
• "We're tired / long season" KU had plenty of energy, everyone plays the same number of games.
• "Big 12 coaches are really good and have scouted us" What are our coaches doing?
• "[player] is injured" Every team has injuries; OSU's #2 scorer missed the game last week; KU's best player can't/won't play a full game

Or my favorite from the three post-Purdue buy-games that we sleep-walked through: "It's right before finals / during finals / right before xmas / right after new years / bla bla" (buy-game opponents celebrate holidays and have finals too)

It's okay to be upset and critical when the team plays poorly and loses by 20 points.
A critique of their play is absolutely acceptable.
They failed to create turnovers and Jefferson not playing well stuff like that absolutely fair.
That said you see things like Baylor blowing OSU on the road which tells you never assume anything in this league.

Just don't go into hyperbolic stupidity. Which for the most part people avoided in the thread but we still get a dusting of that type overreaction. But those who do it are the same ones normally so to be expected I guess

In Big 12 play, Jefferson is 17-51 from the field (33%) with 17 turnovers. Trying to do too much, in my opinion.

Why we are running the halfcourt offense through him when we have very capable guards doesn’t make sense to me.

This team is most successful moving and pass the ball, not iso ball.
Agreed....I'd way rather have Tamin/Killyan ball handling than J Jeff

Take away the "phantom three" and Wayne Morgan probably wins twice in Lawrence. And those were top five KU teams.
and that was the same game with the dead ball score the refs let count. We won that game.

Toure game log. 1st game of the season at the top pretty easy to see why the offense has felt worse since Purdue he has struggled in most games since then and is a non-factor on offense.

At least we know he's probably not going to the NBA yet.

Hopefully he follows a Haliburton trajectory where he looks really awkward and doesn't have much offensive game, then turns it on in year 2.

Lipsey if we’re being honest hasn’t been good for awhile either.
Lol, 6 days ago in Waco he scored 20 points in the 2nd half and completely took over the game.

It was a rough night. Jefferson and Lipsey looked absolutely terrible but they'll be fine.

The bigger concern is Buchanan, he's getting destroyed since we've started Big 12 play. If he keeps getting embarrassed in the paint on D this is another 12-6, 3 seed type team. Obviously good but not what people are hoping for when we've neen mentioned as National Title contenders.

Some of the analysis on here is a bit disingenuous. Have we had success against Kansas in the past; certainly. A majority of those teams were unranked or ranked significantly lower than Kansas at the time.

When the #2 team comes in the gym and you are a 4 point underdog at Phog Allen I can guarantee that Self had his team’s full attention and candidly Kansas could not have played better in the 1H and we could not have played worse. That happens.

No need to overreact. IMO getting slapped by 20 is much better than losing on a last second 2/3 court heave and the team believing “We were unlucky”. TJ will have the attention of the team and I suspect the defensive effort will be much better against Cincy.

I do think that Iowa State needs to show the maturity that they lacked at times last year. Don’t let one loss turn into 3. That is the difference between a #2 seed and a #3 or #4 seed in the tournament.

Since the Purdue game, Iowa State has the 63rd best offense in the country. Turnovers have been a major problem since B12 play. Iowa State also isn't forcing them now either. Something has to give and the elite teams in the B12 will take advantage of that (Houston, BYU, Arizona).
More tape means teams are ready for what you are trying to do to them, TJ will make adjustments and we will be fine. It was one loss on the road to a team that had to get the win, let's see how they fare in Ames for the repeat game.
Problems that we are having, turnovers have started to bite us in the butt, Jefferson is trying to do too much at times, taking the ball to the hole, and teams have figure to start crashing down on him and swiping at the ball as he takes it to the hoop. Some of the freshman are hitting a wall on playing time the past couple of games, but they will get through it, just need to make sure that we come out and take it Cincinnati in the next game.

The announcers made a point that the Kansas B squad took it too the starters in practice on Monday, embarrassing them, maybe that motivation is what they needed to play like they did last night.

I will add Peterson is so smooth and so freaking good. When he is on the floor the other players seem more confident

If he was able to stay in some of their other games and not have to sit due to cramping and hamstring problems they probably have 2 losses.

ISU last night got so far behind that Self could rest him alot.

But make no mistake that kid if healthy is a special talent

Yeah...lots of coping going on. Not only was it a 20 point loss, ISU was down by 26 points in the first half...that's like DII-playing-DI bad. Yet it was the supposed #2 team in the country playing an unranked team. How many times a year does a top-10 (or top-25 for that matter) get down 26 points in the first half of a conference game? Maybe it happens more than I think.

There was a team meeting by KU after WV game as well

A lot of that looks like athleticism/speed.

OSU's guards looked real quick and created some issues and then last night was even more so.

Add in a thin and not super physical post area and weaknesses are exposed.

Offensively a trend of Otz's teams are to get impatient and that happened last night to only make things harder since KU didn't hsve to defend for very long.

It was a must win for KU, at home, so we all knew we were going to get their best effort. Self is too good a coach and they have too much talent to just roll over on the season. ISU will be fine, just need to refocus, work on what we have been doing, and start to look to double down less, as teams have now scouted us enough to know what to expect.

I was a most disappointed with the attitude the team played with. It was arrogant and lazy. The same attitude these last several weeks where they have been talented enough to eventually overwhelm teams. But tonight it was too much to overcome. They aren’t playing hard enough. That is a big problem.
The "it's just one game, stop overreacting" crowd is out in force in the postgame here as usual. This is of course just one loss and one loss is of course not a big deal in the middle of the season, but this is not just one game, it's the continuation and culmination of about a month (ever since the Purdue game) of not playing as well as we played for the first month of the season. "We're 16-1, shut up!" No I will not shut up. We were 7-0 since Purdue because we were playing teams who we had a large talent advantage over. The first time we played like this against a good team (KU) we lost, decisively and badly.

I'd really like to see some changes next game against another inferior opponent. Stop getting punched in the mouth and outplayed for the first half of every game. There's an Einstein quote on doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

Referring back to my list of complaints upthread: did TJ not have our team's full attention? This was a big game for us, would have been a huge win.

I'll now talk myself off the ledge here after this post.

whenever we suffer a loss as bad as this one I try to remind myself that we have coach otz and all will be right because he's a miracle worker after all. I think he can get us back on track. hoping yesterday was just a wakeup call and nothing more. also, the Batman was cooking and showing very good signs.

Can we stop with the lazy comments? Often times apprehension and uncertainty can be mistaken for laziness. It's not fair to make assumptions about heart and effort when you have no idea what's going on with these guys. This team, and TJs teams in general, has earned the benefit of the doubt in that area.

ISU was pressing, and it hurt us, trying to do too much instead of getting into the flow of the game, KU played their best game of the year. Look it sucks, but it happens, the key is not last night, the key is not letting last night turn into another loss on Saturday like we did in football after the Cincinnati loss then play like crap at Colorado.
