**** WBB: Gamethread - Cyclones host Baylor - 2 pm Sunday ESPN ****

I'm sorry but drawing up for a play for the player that Baylor took out of the game in the 2nd half was absolutely dumb. The fact that we fell into that trap is just a total coaching failure.
A. HOW did they take her out of the game? Via double and triple teaming her and backing off the guards. That wasn’t the case here.
B. If not Crooks…who was open with a good shot?

We definitely got out coached . We did exactly what Baylor wanted on offense. Jada needed to dribble until the defense reacted to her then either shoot mid range which she was making or pass it after defense came to her. Her taking open threes and not making the defense work at all made Baylor very happy. No reason we should have lost this game. If your passing it to audi throw it high don't make her have to go down to the floor to try to pick up a bounce pass.

AJ's girl never really followed her to the three point line, so on the catch Audi was double teamed. We will never know what would have happened if Audi had been able to make a clean catch. More than likely she would have been fouled and no call was made, so we would be complaining about that.

Even with a good pass I don't think Crooks gets it off in time. It was a horrendous play call.
Baylor was guarding the wings for a 3 point shot, it was the pass that was poor, give Audi a good pass and let her take it to the hoop. At worst the game is tied up, at best its an and one situation for the win. They only had 2.4 seconds, so not a lot you are going to get down in that amount of time.

I was at the game then after I got home rewatched it. I thought that the original pass was a bounce pass but when I watched the replay it looks like Addy's defender tipped the pass causing it to fall short. One of those if's or buts that happen in a game. We came back and had a tie till their last shot by Scott and had a chance.

We didn't run anything for an outside look, that's my point. To even think that we had enough time to pass it to Brown and then down to Audi was foolish. That was never going to be an easy pass from Brown. we absolutely should have a three point play draw up for this situation.

I'm not sure you understand what Orr did. He did not set it up for Floyd. He set it up for Hallihan and we went a different direction with Floyd. He set up and left a good team, but the reason he did not see that one through hinmself was for his assistant coach and buddy at the time specifically.
I kind of remember that now that you said it. Still like to see Bill do it for a new coach.

We only had something like 2.4 seconds on the clock, Baylor was guarding the wings, we got the ball to Brown at the top of the key, and she made the pass that was there to Crooks. If you remember Kansas was doubling on Crooks, allowing the wings to be wide open for the 3 point winner in that game, Baylor was not going to give us that shot. We made the right decision, feeding Crooks, it was just poor execution more than a badly drawn up play. You have to take what the defense is giving you there with so little time on the clock.

ISU needs another shooter from the outside, or at least someone willing to shoot the ball, Baylor was daring us to shot them yesterday, and for the most part we refused to do it. Until this team gets to where it can make 10 or more 3 point shots a game, we are going to have to keep feeding Crooks. Brown also could not buy a basket yesterday for some reason, maybe she was hurt, but she really played poorly.

Yeah I get that but you HAVE to have a play for that scenario too. An inbound pass to Brown and a pass to Audi was never going to be the play with that little amount of time.

I was really impressed with the Baylor bigs yesterday, they are long, lean and athletic, something that ISU is really lacking. Both Brown and Crooks are basically the same player, body wise. ISU should have been trying to find a post like Baylor has that is just athletic as heck and then rotate Brown and Crooks with the athletic post in those two positions. Williams is our athletic post player, but she just do not have it, we need another.

It's easy to sit here and second guess the play because it did not work, we have an All American post player, you have to get her the ball when she is being guarded one on one. If Audi had gotten a clean pass and scored, everyone today would be saying it was a great call, and Baylor should have doubled teamed her. It just didn't work yesterday, that does not make it the wrong play. I also would have liked to seen some movement from the guards as we inbounded the ball, but we got the ball into Brown at the top of the key and the pass to Crooks that we wanted, it was just tipped or a poor pass.

The likely hood of that play ever creating a clean look in 2.4 seconds is very very small. It wasn't the right call.

Biggest error in my untrained eyes was having Audi in on defense on Baylor's last possession coming out of a time out. No hedge or challenge coming off the pick and gave up basically a free throw to a really good shooter.

And she would have had to make both free throws if the shot hadn't gone in

Yeah that was a pretty inexcusable error. We also had a foul to give so we could have made things tougher for them. Just an all round coaching gaff to close out the game.

That was the bigger problem with a foul to give, when the Baylor gal made her move to the hoop, we should have fouled her right then before she started to shoot.

It a minimum it would have requires so many things to go right. Good pass to Addi, an immediate post entry pass (which is a hard thing to do rushed), and Audi making a quick move to the hoop, which isn't exactly her forte. It just wasn't the right play.

Then they need to shoot more, because we are not doing it enough. Way to often we are making 4 or 5 three pointers a game, not nearly enough in todays game.
They can't shoot if they don't have the ball, or don't have the ball in a position to be able to shoot. As far as I could tell, Hare and Jackson shot every time they had the chance to. Baylor was only backing off of Williams and Beatty--Iowa State's only two guards who are shooting under 35% from three.

And that's where @BillBrasky4Cy's point about more movement or shot creation for others has a lot of merit. I disagreed in that discussion after KU, because KU was willing to defend Audi with one player, and there are very few times where Audi Crooks one-on-one in the post isn't about as good of offense as you can get. But with how Baylor was defending, Iowa State needed to do something much different, and it was definitely coaching failure to not have anything ready.

Even just trying some different things like having Brown, Hare, or Jackson initiate the offense, or play Wilson in the minutes that Williams was sitting, would have been a starting place to not just let Baylor do the same thing over and over.

It will be interesting to see how teams defend Crooks and Iowa State moving forward. Baylor's strategy seems like an effective one, but Baylor also has more length than a lot of teams--to be able to simultaneously double Crooks with two players at or above 6'0", while keeping another on Brown.
