This was a tough one. Baylor took it to the Sisters and a struggling offense couldn't handle it. Some in depth analysis in here.

The biggest concern is the de-evolution of what appeared to be a much more dynamic offense in November and much of December. We are seeing two guards standing passively on each corner while Crooks, Brown and JW are the only active participants.
Hit the nail on the head! What the heck happened? Do we not have plays designed for Hare or Jackson?

I have to give Baylor a lot of credit their game plan and adjustments were masterful. They scouted Jada and Beaty perfectly. Nikki Collen and her staff are currently better coaches than ours.

As Bill Self once said, "the ball finds energy and goes to it." Baylor was just quicker to the ball all game. They simply wanted the win more and willed themselves to victory. The Deng girl was a marksman when they needed it today. I was surprised we didn;t see more of her after the first half she had.

The will to rebound was totally missing. Perhaps we are too reliant on Addy, which wasn't going to happen if she is hurting. On a play in the third quarter everyone dropped back when a shot went up, and only Audi was under/near the basket to rebound. That time the errant bound was mishandled and we did get the ball back. That was one of the few breaks that went our way on the afternoon;

With no one guarding Jada we seemed too content to try for threes. I wanted us to stress their D more and get into the lane to draw fouls or get easier shots. I felt that we never forced them to change from what was working when they dedicated their defense to Audi.

Just this laymans thoughts and opinions.

We were clearly out coached

"In one of the more classless moves I’ve seen in a while after an out of bounds ball, Cullen stood in front of her assistant who held the ball and prevented him from giving it to the official. One of the stranger things I’ve seen in a while."

So, where was the Technical Foul?

Easy to second guess the last call after the fact, but with so little time left on the clock I would have taken the chance at giving the ball right back to the inbounder for the three and the win even though we weren't at the top of our game shooting today

My main summary is in the game thread. But it agrees with acoustimac

Bill played right into Baylor's hands by having players who Baylor refused to guard outside take a ton of shots. There are ways to affect that strategy. Could have had Jada screen the best shooters so their defender is trying to go around screens with no other defender there to help. I was glad in the second half that Jada was dribbling in and taking the mid range a few times. She was making those. The repeated threes for most of the game with no adjustment was beyond frustrating.

The lack of adjustment was glaring.

This might be a good idea in theory, but as I recall, Jada was covered and wouldn't have been open for a return pass, but it might have taken too much time for her to get open.

Irrelevant now, and I could be mistaken, but I thought Jada's defender switched after the inbound pass and Jada was left standing alone when she entered the court--eerily similar to how they sagged off her at the three point line much of the second half. Played right into Baylor's hand forcing it into Audi who was the focus of their attention. Outside chance for a putback or rebounding foul if Jada misses--which is probably what the staff was hoping for going to Audi.

Not looking for an argument or calling out the staff (or you) just MY observation after the fact.

No one knows how much Brown's back issue played into her sub-par game or how much it was due to going against some more athletic gals like Littlepage-Buggs, guess it was likely a combo. Brown was also sub-par in the Baylor game in KC last season with only 6 pts and 9 TO's even with Littlepage-Buggs out with injury. Brown did not have a boatload of assists in both games so she didn't entirely disappear as seems to be a common hot take.

Will be interesting to see how she does versus woeful Cincy which is another cupcake game and not likely to be very competative. Would seem to be a game you play her less in if she needs rest time.

Injures at ISU and a lot of schools, unless it's something obvious like a severe ankle sprain, are often shrouded in mystery. All we knew when Rae Johnson and Kristen Scott had back issues was "back issues" and a vague reference to Rae having a "surgical procedure". She was back within a few games so that "surgical" was likely x-ray guided cortisone shots.

Seriously though, get some Zach Edey tape in front of Bill. Painter did a wonderful job of getting Edey post touches without just camping him out on the block. It allowed for cutting and movement and allowed everyone to be a threat, all while having a dominate post player.

Every time they have Audi run straight to the block while they play 4 out 1 under. Half the girls aren't even hiding the fact their only job is to pass it to Audi. There aren't even in a basketball position with the ball--they just have it above their head trying to make a pass. That's not saying they aren't capable players, it's saying they aren't allowed to play with any real freedom out there.

I've said this every year for 12 years, but as great as Fennelly is, he his HORRIBLE at making in game adjustments. I don't know if he just refuses to, or if he is incapable of doing it, but if his pregame plan doesn't work, we're going to lose... that's just the way it is.

I was wondering why Syd wasn't in at the end. She is one of our highest percentage shooters, so I would be more confident with her rushing a shot than some others.

And yet, we were one shot away from winning the Baylor game.
