Great question and a point I’ve thrown out there. Kids love Smith. He won the last 4 games. Unknown whether MC was onboard w keeping him, but you gotta think no.

From a management perspective, I think it’s an awful move. Maybe, maybe it saves you a few kids. But you know players are gonna run to smith with every little complaint about play calls, touches, playing time, etc. how he handles that will determine if this is a small problem or a giant one.

What you think?
Bummer.

Go Cyclones, and go CJR.

I'd imagine that Campbell had plenty of leverage to drop Smith if that was a sticking point for him, being able to pick your staff is kind of a foundational thing for any coach.

I agree that retaining Smith was probably told to Campbell and it does present a potential problem going forward. Combined with Heacock retiring instead of going with him it could be a real problem.

Zero chance CMC - on his own accord - keeps someone in the locker room where players may have more loyalty to him than to CMC.

This feels like it was a term of negotiation with the AD and boosters. At least temporarily. Time will tell, I suppose.

Why you would think MC wouldn’t be on board for it? Would be insane to sign up for that job and not be able to dictate your staff. There is no way he didn’t sign off on that. A lot of new coaches keep former staff on for continuity and to have some insight into the program.
He may have signed off on it but he didn’t like it I’m sure. I think he agreed with some pressure and belief that he would lose a lot of players if he didn’t. I also think that Smith will “find” a new job next year.

Jeremiah Cooper made his share of money while at Iowa State. I am not dismissing a "Student Athlete" I am suggesting a "Professional Athlete" to go somewhere else to get his ego stroked. Most of these guys are now well paid professionals. Heck the new guy Golden at Ole Miss said he had a couple of players living in the same gated community that he lived in.
Did Cooper get upset with some social media comments or what happened? Good thing he didn't come to CF and read the comments here.

He had all the leverage, there is no way he didn’t agree to this if he didn’t like it. That’s just not how this works. PSU was on their 5th or 6th choice there is no way they are giving this on cmc or him accepting it. It’s a recipe for disaster

JP said Pedo State needs to let Matt Campbell be Matt Campbell for them to have success. I think he was probably aware that Matt Campbell probably wouldn't have full reigns of the program.

This is my problem with Hassel, he talks sports and know absolutely NOTHING about sports. I don't expect Jeff Woody Xs & Os breakdown sports every podcast, but I at least want some good info and he offers none.

But I agree, he is great at being a clown to try to make you laugh. His trolling is obnoxiously dumb, though. I'm glad CW doesn't go to the lengths Hassel does when it comes to that.
I feel like I learn way more about sports from Hassel than CW...but that's my own personal opinion.
