***Official portal tracker thread***

Based on our depth chart, our three starting LBs were listed at 235 (2) or 240 (1). That size is not at all rare for an NFL LB, let alone “very rare.” Just google the 2025 LB draft rankings, the first list that pops up has all of the Top 5 LBs between 235 and 245.

Or just look up an NFL roster. I checked the Chiefs - 5 of the 6 active LBs are between 234 and 240 lbs.
The NFL guys can run. Ours could not. I’m not knocking them. We just lacked speed at the LB position.

Don’t know about “a lot of players being forced out”. We’ll see.
Only thing we’ll know when the portal opens is what dozen or so Cyclone players are going to Ped St. and how many Wazzou guys are following CJR.
Then it will be interesting to see where the other 30 Cyclones end up, including back at Iowa State.

IMO "forced out" is in the eye of the beholder. If Iowa State isn't willing to pay what a player feels their worth, is that being "forced out"?

I bet a player feels the answer is yes, because they are just asking for what they hear the market is paying.

Whereas, I imagine the coaching staff would say no.

Yea, I hope the path is open for guys to come back if they find out the money/opportunities aren't there in the portal. But I wouldn't hold spots/money for departing players. But the reality is, 70 P4 schools will be active in the portal. So even if ISU players don't end up at PSU, they will have 68 of other schools looking to fill holes.

It will be interesting to see how fast things move once the portal opens. Logically, it would seem like players would take visits and negotiate money. But if there is a rush of portal signings the first couple days, it's all about money.

I saw an interview with Indiana's Cignetti a couple weeks ago and he was complaining about the Jan 2 portal date. He felt it should have been same as last year because his take was players decision to enter portal was made before November 30. And that's coming from a coach who's team is in the CFP. But the reality is GM's are probably reaching out to agents about holes their team is looking to fill and agents are reaching out to GMs about what are they willing to pay.

Rogers. The "D" is silent.
We have to get this right!
/ sarcasm
And invisible.

I'm not one to crack spelling, even names we should know.

Jimmy is easier. :)

I mailed him my NIL savings this year. Hopefully he can use it to pay postage on any letters he sends to recruits.

It's gotten pretty crazy. There are random high school freshman girls basketball players with "agents" now. They basically create a bunch of social media posts for them (and charge for it), in hopes that some day the player actually does go D1 and earns NIL.
There was one at my son’s school who went this route. It was comical what was written. My wife would show me some of it. This girl is far from athletic. She could handle the ball but was slow and couldn’t jump. Also her shot was basically a chest pass to the basket. He basically was trying to talk her up as borderline D1.

You're not wrong, I should have stated their college weights as most pro LB's put on 5-15 lbs of weight as the age/mature

Our defense under heacock to me felt a lot like the bears defense this year, hinging on turnovers and hanging on a thread, so I will be excited to see what Rogers and Bobbit bring to ISU, hopefully speedier LB's and a better D-line

Agree with that. I just had to point out the wildly inaccurate statements in that post regarding the weight of NFL LBs.

Rose is the prime example of an ISU LBer who was way too bulked up.

It's Heartland College Sports. Reporter is Pete Mundo, article reviewed by Editor in Chief Pete Mundo, based on a tweet read by Pete Mundo, corroborated by Derek Duke (also known as Pete Mundo) with catering services provided by Mundo Fine Dining Intl (Pete's mom).
He's still cranky that Jimmy used the F bomb.

Yeah, so when you see the craziness happening at these lower levels, you know the "guidance" some D1 players are receiving is questionable at best.

I had a squawk friend of mine send me 7 instagram post about how ISU has 16 players left on the roster and 42 in the portal. This is exactly why hawkeye fans are my favorite. They finally have something to rejoice at in their athletics, and it wasn't even a victory over ISU LMAO

Surely nothing can go wrong with a system like that...

WAZZU 2025 defense stats versus ISU 2025:
  • 3rd Down Conversion Pct Defense
    • W: 35 (35.2%), ISU: 62 (38.8%)
  • 4th Down Conversion Pct Defense
    • W: 7 (33.3%), ISU: 36 (45.8%)
  • First Down Defense (Given Up)
    • W: 20 (216), ISU: 16 (211)
    • WAZZU played 13 games so per game Wazzu was 1 per game better
  • Red Zone Defense
    • W: 10 (72.7%), ISU: 62 (83.3%)
  • Rushing Defense/game:
    • W: 35 (125.2), ISU: 49 (138)
  • Scoring Defense
    • W: 30 (20.23), ISU: 29 (20.17)
  • Sacks Forced (season total)
    • W: 37 (31), ISU: 127 (13)
  • Tackles for Loss (per game)
    • W: 75 (5.3), ISU: 89 (5.0)
  • Total Defense (per game)
    • W: 15 (299.5), ISU: 56 (356.5)

We can all agree ISU had a pretty good defense this past year. CJR's team at Wazzu cleared in most stats, especially sacks.

Why would Rodgers be running good Big 12 players off like this?

Money!

That's just a reality. Iowa State has around $13M to spend on players. We know PSU is spending $30M on players and I would bet PSU is inline with the other teams in the top half of Big10/SEC. So think about it and I am just spitballing:
  • PSU Approach with $30M Annual Budget:
    • Pay 10 Elite Players: $12M (Avg. $1.2M/player)
    • Pay 20 Next Tier Players: $8M (Avg. $400k/player)
    • Pay 30 Next Tier Players $6M (Avg. $200k/player)
    • Pay 40 Next Tier Players $4M (Avg. $100k/player)
  • Iowa State Approach with $13M Annual Budget:
    • Pay 10 Elite Players: $5M (Avg. $500K/player)
    • Pay 20 Next Tier Players: $3M (Avg. $150K/player)
    • Pay 30 Next Tier Players: $3M (Avg. $100k/player)
    • Pay 40 Next Tier Players: $2M (Avg. $50k/player)
The above is simplistic and schools could budget by position group, or carve out a specific budget for HS recruits. I am sure there is a lot of nuance that GM's and Head Coaches have to approach roster building in 2026.

But if your a player at Iowa State (whether top-end starter, solid starter, 2nd stringer or young player) it's easy to see where agents can paint a picture of riches. Especially if a player is confident in their abilities or has a proven track record of success.

For example, if I'm a solid starter at Iowa State making $150k and Texas A&M offers me $400k, why wouldn't I take the money if I'm confident I can push for playing time with the Aggies. Or maybe the Aggies offer me $250K, is $100K more worth it even if I'm bench depth and a special teams player?
