***Official portal tracker thread***

Very true, coaches can't create a culture without players to execute it and model it, but the coaches also get credit for bringing in those kinds of players.
Yep, Campbell brought in character guys, earned their respect, and then let them lead too. He deserves a large part of the credit for that.

That’s what I figured. I assume this whole “Rodgers doesn’t want them anyway” narrative is just a typical fan defense mechanism.

I believe there are a few separate categories here. I think there are the higher end guys like Cooper, Johntez, Neal, Rocco, Brahmer, etc. who will get pay days elsewhere. I doubt there was anything Jimmy could do to make them stay, and that's fine.

I know of at least one situation of a freshman who was redshirting being told to find somewhere else to play. I don't know the exact semantics of the conversation, but I know the takeaway for this person was effectively to hit the portal and find a new home.

I'm guessing it's all a part of starting carte blanche and making room for alot of WSU guys. Whether that works? Who knows. But I do think it's important to consider when criticizing players loyalty that some of these guys may not have had much of a choice.

Our LBs are nothing like the LBs WSU has. Plodding turtles compared to those guys. Bobbit put his plodding turtles on the line so the LBs can be lighter and faster. And if you think Daniel Jackson, Carson Brown and Carson Van Dinter, to name a few, were going to be paid any kind of real money to stay then I don’t know what else to tell you.
Given that I never said or implied that any of those 3 (or any other crappy players) were going to paid any kind of real money to stay, you can stop inventing arguments. I don’t know what else to tell you.

I think it’s highly unlikely that Rodgers ran off any of our top LBs because he doesn’t think they can play in his scheme. “We didn’t want him anyway” is just a typical fan mechanism

For sure, there are players who didn’t see the field here who are transferring, and would have done so without a coaching change. There are usually close to double digits of those annually at every program.

So, they run an article based off one hearsay tweet (now deleted) from a guy who wasn’t confirmed to be a relative? Neat.
It's Heartland College Sports. Reporter is Pete Mundo, article reviewed by Editor in Chief Pete Mundo, based on a tweet read by Pete Mundo, corroborated by Derek Duke (also known as Pete Mundo) with catering services provided by Mundo Fine Dining Intl (Pete's mom).

Rogers and Bobbitt's system will see more LB's at and around 6'-6-1" and 220-230 pounds. Comparing college weights, it is VERY rare to see an NFL LB at the size a Heacock LB was (Fred Warner, Jack Campbell are the exceptions).

LB's in a 4-2-5 scheme are asked to go sideline to sideline more, thus needing more speed. Here are two likely transfers for Iowa State next season at LB, who will battle Willich to start (All around 6'1" and 220-225lbs):

Caleb Bacon, Cael Brezina, Cooper Ebel, and Zach Lovitt in the new scheme would likely be asked to play the 4th spot on the d-line.

Dline, corners and safeties for defense you can include
Assuming none of our Defensive portal guys could play in a 4/2/5 (which seems unbelievable) that leaves another 20 portal guys who don’t fit scheme on the offensive side.
I’m sure there are some guys who don’t fit what CJR wants to do. Just think it’s way down the list of why we have 40+ guys in the portal.

Brezina is the only one I think could have seen some time as a backer. Those others needed to add 20 pounds and put their hands on the ground.

Safety also will change, no longer will there be a middle safety need to fill the run (Neal, Freyler, Verdon). Those size guys will be the new LB's.

Safeties will be lighter and faster, more like corners. With how much Bobbitt and CJR blitz, the 5 DBs will have to play a lot more 0 coverage and go hat on hat

I read that Schlimgen took over starting for Palano, if so, would they both come if they play the same lb position? Or would one move positions?

The scheme will be much different. There will probably be guys who it will suit better, that group will be smaller. We are going to a more attacking defense, so sometimes it’s not the skills they have, it’s their thought process. Some guys are more thinkers than others. Some are reactionary, this is what we typically did. Rogers appears to like defenders who attack and not wait to see and react. Mentally some players just can’t flip that switch.

The talk was always 5 star culture. Who created that culture? I believe David Montgomery deserves as much credit as Campbell. Remember the stories of him on Friday nights by himself in the practice facility and over time basically the whole team followed his lead? If DM wasn’t here, would that culture been as strong as it was?
Yes. There is no question that Campbell brought in high character kids. That’s been the biggest reason for our success.
Any other positions besides LB? That seems to be go to ‘scheme’ difference which may have merit.
We’re going to need more interior DL and and probably Edge guys The guys who played boundary end can probably still play that. But we need more tackle and nose types. Then you need some true rush ends. We won’t need as many safeties but you can use hybrid guys (big safety/small lb) at the “monster” spot.

Based on our depth chart, our three starting LBs were listed at 235 (2) or 240 (1). That size is not at all rare for an NFL LB, let alone “very rare.” Just google the 2025 LB draft rankings, the first list that pops up has all of the Top 5 LBs between 235 and 245.

Or just look up an NFL roster. I checked the Chiefs - 5 of the 6 active LBs are between 234 and 240 lbs.

I think they both started ir at least played together a lot in the bowl game. Those two are an upgrade over our previous LB room.

Exactly and you try telling a LB he’s a DE now.

I knew the system was pretty well cooked when you started seeing Tweets to the effect of "Jimmy Smith has hit the portal per his agency, John Doe Sports. Jimmy Smith had 9 catches for 182 yards and a touchdown last season". We've got dudes that I didn't even know were on the roster with representation.
This is one thing that must change.

IIRC "agents" for college kids can be a random friend or a father/brother or whoever. They don't even have to be certified/licensed.

3,300 players in the portal. That's probably well over 1,000 "agents" these Coaches and General Managers have to deal with.

Barf.
It's gotten pretty crazy. There are random high school freshman girls basketball players with "agents" now. They basically create a bunch of social media posts for them (and charge for it), in hopes that some day the player actually does go D1 and earns NIL.
