Rocco joining the Transfer Portal

As someone who came up through the era of college sports where there was a real identity players shared with fans when choosing a place to play, I'm having such a difficult time figuring out how much emotional investment to put in a game that has become so mercenary.

You're right. It's just 'business'. And that is why I don't like it anymore. No loyalty. No dedication. Those are things when I was in college, stood for something. Let's be clear. I'm not bitter. I'm just simply stating that my fandom is stuck with the way things used to happen; bowl games spread across the holidays. But the CFP, the portal, NIL, AWOL players, etc have absolutely demolished my interest. I'm worried that basketball is next on the extermination list of media greed.

Cfb has been about greed for 50 plus years.

I absolutely wish Rocco well.
But, if it isn't guaranteed he is going to PSU, he is now in the portal vs Hoover, Raiola, Leavitt, Sorensby (although he already sounds committed) Laggway, Craig...... that is a LOT of good quarterbacks if you are looking for the cash.

I agree. But, the ambiguity of a clear distinction of 'best' at least made several bowl games not only palatable, but even interesting. Now, it's way different. And the looseness of rules has made the whole college football post season an absolute mess. At least men's basketball, though surrounded by the same rules hasn't been infected by the post season non-participation bug and/or abandonment bug.

I wish I could have watched Rocco for another year. He's always been a solid QB. And a better leader & person. Iowa States W/L record during his tenure, is my equivalent of "scoreboard". His legacy is secure in my mind.

We are in a new era of CFB. Every player is a free agent and the bagmen have $1B+ to spend on players. But for Rocco I think the move is more about development. It will be interesting if he follows Campbell or exposes his talents to a new coach and new system.

Now I hope the staff can keep at least one of Manske or Moberly- both have looked OK in limited duty and seem like good matches for what Rogers & Roehl want to do offensively.

I wish him well and am sad to see him go. The Iowa State connection is very real, and I can't believe it isn't for a player like him too. I have plenty of games in my memory bank of him making a play and/or a game winning drive. Look at the bright side, we won't hear or see for the gazillionth time his family in the stands and how his dad played in the NFL for 11 seasons;);)

Campbell doesn’t care if Rocco is the eighth most talented QB in the portal. He’ll go with his culture guy even after his next three pick sixes. Gotta believe Ped St fans are 50/50 on this one.

The fact is CMC has credibility with NFL scouts and front offices when it came to putting players there. CJFnR is going to have to develop and display that for a bit before his players are given the same opportunities. I think Rocco's best chance to make an NFL roster was staying, but if he was on the viewed as being on the outside edge of being a draftee, having a coach NFL teams trust for borderline guys might make the difference in getting there or not.
Have you checked how many jackrabbits are in the NFL?

Maybe could set his market value higher though too...hot housing market never hurts the seller.

This was a good decision for Rocco. He can make some good NIL $$ and bank it for retirement is my thought. He isn’t going to play pro so this is his last year to make some big cash.

He will be a good coach I bet ! I could see him on staff at Penn St in 2 years.
