My entire life I thought in the song 'Mele Kalikimaka' that they sing 'Mele Kalikimaka is a wise way...to say Merry Christmas to you...'

I was today year's old when I found out I was wrong.

I saw Frank Sinatra sing late in his career.

He had giant monitors showing the lyrics. I was far up in the stands. I could read the lyrics from all the way at the top of the arena.

Sinatra didn't come close to singing what was in the screen. He sang whatever the **** he wanted.

dahliaclone, sing whatever the **** makes you happy.

Merry Christmas

I heard yesterday that it's not actually Hawaiian, but is a "Hawaiian-ization". Hawaiian only has 13 letters in their alphabet, always alternates consonants and vowels, and always ends words with a vowel. So you take "merry Christmas," substitute the closest Hawaiian letter and add vowels as required, and end up with Mele (Merry) Kaliki (Christ) maka (mas).

There were no words for Merry Christmas in Hawaiian so the missionaries created that approximation and Hawaiian Christians adopted it so it as Hawaiian as every adopted English word is English.

This sounds very offensive. I feel like I should be offended.

Also don't have to alternate vowels and consonants. There just can't be more than one consonant sounds in each syllable - at least that is what I understand. Hawai'i, Molokai, O'ahu, and Kaua'i don't strictly alternate vowels and consonants.

I'm confused - if that's not what it means what does it mean?

You must be older than dirt. I've never heard that song and I'm old.

When I was a little kid I thought UPS was part of the military because of how the trucks and uniforms looked back then. I remember when I realized it was basically the same as FedEx or even the post office and had nothing to do with the army.
