To pull your driving record and require proof of personal insurance if you do zero driving for your job?

Mine is doing it. I don't give a rip but the old ladies in the office are up in arms.

At least in Iowa, court records are public information available at Iowa Courts Online. Iowa Code requires drivers to have insurance so not sure why it’s a big deal.

I’ve never had to provide proof of insurance, but they want your driving record to make sure people are insurable in case something happens on the job

Shouldn’t be a big deal to pull those records. But I’d guess using that to affect your employment status would require some kind of connection to your job. No different than jobs with security clearances pulling your credit report.

Why would it be any of their concern or business? Do not see how it has any relevance to a persons employment if there is no driving involved with the job. What reason do they give for doing this?

Iowa is an at-will state. You can be fired for any reason, as long as it’s not something related to a protected class or status.

Your employer could absolutely fire you for a bad driving record if they wanted to, even if your job has nothing to do with driving.

Probably?
I know when I was working at a plant up in Wi they instituted a drug testing policy for floor employees but not the office. At the employee meetings I brought up either all should be tested or none. That didn't fly and guess who was in the 1st batch to be "randomly " tested. Didn't bother me I was clean, but I don't blame your office ladies just another example of corporate overreach.

Seems weird to me if not related to work.

I work in mortgage and it’s commonplace to look at your credit score and for any mortgage defaults: which is relevant because if part of my job is to make sure people are paying their mortgages then I should probably use a history of paying mine.

But driving record and proof of insurance - especially the latter - seems really odd.

I worked for a company that wanted to implement a random drug test policy. They already had to conduct DOT screenings and pre employment testing. The president of the company said that he believed in random drug testing and he would be the first one to submit to a test. I informed him that I didn’t believe he knew what random was.

My wife’s does it and she doesn’t drive for them either. They may be doing it for two reasons: 1. It’s a red flag if you drive without insurance or a license. 2. May impact how you get to work. Don’t know the legality.

So are you saying that someone has to have proof of insurance as a condition of employment? That would seem bizarre if driving isn't a part of the job. It's possible that someone doesn't own a car and gets to work by other means. If they are just collecting information on employees to see who can and can't drive company vehicles doesn't seem like a huge deal.

If your company truly requires all employees to have personal auto insurance, seems like it would be a violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) which prohibits employment discrimination of people with disabilities.
