So It Begins... Private Equity in CFB

Turning CFB into a "for profit entity"...hmmm, wonder how well that will go for fans.

This will be a disaster for college football and college athletics overall. Some people will win but most, including the fans, will lose. Greed ultimately ruins everything.

If you're a fan of a team like Utah, be careful what you wish for. Enjoy a private equity firm trying to milk every cent they can out of you the fans and cutting costs in all kinds of ways inside the athletics department.

Fans better buckle up. Here's a quote from the article.

"Utah Brands & Entertainment will house most of the components traditionally held within the university’s athletic department, including many athletic personnel and divisions. However, fundraising will remain with the school.

The new company’s primary goal is to generate more revenue across an assortment of areas, including ticketing, concessions, corporate sales and sponsorships. Charged with overseeing and operating the revenue-share pay system for Utah athletes, the new entity provides the department with more flexibility and freedom considering it will operate separate from a public university."

Hope Ute fans enjoy $20 hot dogs

So if UU makes the CFP or wins a bowl game, is the PE firm now entitled to a portion of that payout? What a cluster.

Who the hell is going to donate money to a PE firm for their profit? Have they actually thought this through? I have to imagine their athletic department donations will decrease. I would look at the “donation” level as a very expensive fee to get tickets.

So what you’re saying is that Utah is going to be selling beer in Rice-Eccles before Pollard allows it in Jack Trice?

Otherwise known as squeeze em till they pop. Cash all the checks.

A nice little test case for people out shaking the bushes for pocket change for AD funding. There are so many ways for this to go south and be a net negative beyond the up front funding that comes with the agreement.
