They've had 3 coaches in 60 years. They aren't just all of a sudden going to turn into a revolving door.Matt is a damn good coach, but the expectations are through the roof at Penn State and he will be expected to win national championships.
I think he'll have a lot of success there.
They just ran off a guy that made it to the semi finals last year. That is who the fanbase is at Penn State. If he isn't winning a title every year or in the conversation he will be gone. Comparing the entire tenure of Franklin to what the expectations are now at PSU doesn't work, college sports has changed over the last decade. Why the hell can't he meet the expectations? He's good enough to do at least what Franklin did and that guy kept his job for 10 years. Campbell was competing with OU at ISU so I don't know why he wouldn't be able to have some success against the best in the Big 10.
Well he'll be there for at least 10 years then. If he gets fired he can always get a job at a school of ISU's caliber again. He looked bored in Ames the last few years. The look of "this is the best it can possibly get here". I totally get why he left. Even if he gets fired I guarantee you he won't regret at least trying that job out. If I thought I was a pretty good coach I'd want to see what I could do at a place like that also.He might but it's not easy, he doesn't have more money or more resources than 10-20 other programs the expect him to finish #1 in front of. Winning a B10 CCG will buy a lot of time and be real progress though. If 2nd/3rd in Big Ten is all he can get he'll be in the same Franklin zone anyway.
10 years, we don't even know what college football will look like in 5 years?!Well he'll be there for at least 10 years then. Has anything changed over those 60 years? Half the time they werent even in a conference I believe. They've had 3 coaches in 60 years. They aren't just all of a sudden going to turn into a revolving door.
He'll be there for a long while and he'll do well.
Maybe he has confidence in his own ability? Ever think of that? Hes got nothing to lose. They just ran off a guy that made it to the semi finals last year. That is who the fanbase is at Penn State. Well college athletics has changed in 60 years, Franklin clearly lost the team in 2025, but he had a lot of injuries. What if Campbell loses his whole secondary to injuries in 2 years and they go 8-4, would Penn State be happy with that? They've had 3 coaches in 60 years. Ok whatever, Campbell is an amazing coach but if coaching college football was all about confidence would anyone lose?Maybe he has confidence in his own ability? Ever think of that? Hes got nothing to lose.
The better version of yourself better win 12 games.Meh, it wont be as fun, he is now forced to win.
Probably. Assuming Campbell hasn't gone 4-21 against the Top 10 for the previous decade like Franklin did.Well college athletics has changed in 60 years, Franklin clearly lost the team in 2025, but he had a lot of injuries. He probably won't ever win a NC. I'll bet he's in the playoffs a lot though.Agree I just think people underestimate how hard it is to win an NC which is the bar he has now. The only reason winning B10 buys him time is Franklin was just short of that every season.
This stat is kind of flawed. It's not like they had 3 guys who did 25, 15 and 20 years. JoePedo made up the majority of those years and no one was going to fire him until... well. I don't like the logic that just because they kept one guy for for 45 years doesn't mean they won't all of a sudden make rash decisions. I mean they fired Franklin mid season, who's previous three seasaons were 11-2, 10-3 and 10-3 (with a CFP appearance). They've had 3 coaches in 60 years. They aren't just all of a sudden going to turn into a revolving door.

Facts. The current CFP arrangement you just need to be a top 4 Big Ten team to make it. At ISU you have to get around all the tie breakers and then win the conference championship game.He probably won't ever win a NC. I'll bet he's in the playoffs a lot though.
(Bill OBrien was there first after Joe Pa was squeezed out. Franklin was the guy after the guy, which is always the one you want to be.)This stat is kind of flawed. I'd say the odds are that Campbell will be dealing with an AD/fan base/donor issue that's a lot closer to Franklin's tenure than Paterno's. I'd say Pedo State is definitely a lot closer to "Win Now or be gone." program than a "Let's Keep the guy 40 years." program. Hell, Franklin got the benifit of a few growing pains just for the aftermath of the Pedo scandal. I don't think they will can him for not winning an NC, but they aren't going to keep Campbell around if he's not solidly in the play-off picture most years.
I think CMC's biggest issues are going to be his game day decisisions, clock management, etc. (Sorry, I never thought CMC was a good game day coach.), his lack of emphasis on good special teams and those "In the margins" things that seemed to cost us games. Unless things drastically change, CMC is always good for at least one or two headscratcher games a year. (See Colorado this year.)
