Players in, Players out

Will be interesting to see how well the PSU fans like opposing QB's to have 3 hours in the pocket just waiting for a receiver to break open while they rush only 3.
So, it was well known the down 3 was because recruiting DLs was difficult at an elite level. And, Heacock was simply working with what he inherited. It turned out well. Certainly well enough that several clinics were opened to learn it. Also, apparently developing HS talent into LBs was easier too. What I'm saying is that PSU will likely have the athletes to provide alternative schemes. Don't bet on Heacock bringing the same scheme.

Except he made the change in like his third season so it was his guys pretty much by then.

I am not trying to trash any of our players. I think we have a lot of good ones and it's been great to see many of them grow into the roles they play today.

That said, if Matt has the money to spend on his roster that is being reported, you really have to wonder how many of our guys are going to be suiting up for Penn State. There will be some, no doubt. But don't we think their expectations are going to be higher? Won't their donors have a bigger say in roster decisions whereas Matt enjoyed an unusual amount of autonomy here?

Let's say that plays out and not as many go directly to Penn State as we fear. I, for one, don't think this is going to be our guys suddenly dressed in navy and white in Happy Valley next year. It's all way more complicated than that.

Many people are saying "they may not go to Penn State, but they could certainly go elsewhere". This is, of course, true. But would it not reason that many would prefer some level of continuity staying at Iowa State and - presumably - taking advantage of some additional NIL money that will be freed up elsewhere?

Maybe this is copium on my part and the roster is certainly going to look a lot different. I'm just wondering if it's going to be the 75-90% loss that some are projecting.

We all know the time is quickly coming where we are going to lose many players. Good, bad or ugly, it's going to happen. My biggest question is who will Rogers bring with him and is that a good thing? WSU is pretty much bottom of the barrel. Admittedly, I have not watched them at all and have no idea how good their roster actually is. Is there any way we can keep some starters in Ames? I feel like if we hired Mouser or Becht, we could have probably counted on returning 50%+. But I don't have any idea with Rogers what to expect. Anyone have any insight on this?
For everyone that can't figure out what I meant by WSU being bottom of the barrel, I meant that their overall roster is way down there compared to most P4 schools. I know they've produced Ward and Mateer.

For several, leaving ISU because you’re mad that Campbell left is cutting off your nose to spite for face.

One thing Campbell is going to see that he probably has never had to deal with before is legend players. I didn’t look much but a 2 second scan and I saw Lavar Arrington jr is on the roster. You think there isn’t any pressure to take the son of a former stud player and them waving their large donation level at the AD and saying my kids on the roster and there won’t be outside pressure. ISU doesn’t have that many big name players out there let alone former wealthy pro players.

My guess is any starter who isn’t an in state kid tests the waters. I’m cautiously optimistic that we can hang onto at least half of the Iowa kids. The current state of college athletics means over half the rostered kids will be gone with a whole bunch of transfers taking their place.

Campbell is a culture guy. The best way to instill the culture he wants is to bring in guys that are already engrained in it, even if the dont play (i.e. Conrad Hawley). I'm sure he isn't concerned about about our this not being "good enough".

Hopefully our guys will stay if they feel they won’t start. Campbell won’t give guarantees. How many of our guys would most likely start in Happy Valley?

Honestly, probably not many. But there's a good chance they will make considerably more money sitting on the bench of the coach they love, than starting here for a coach they don't know.
