Matt Campbell to Penn State??

Jason Scheer tweeted there was some smoke with Campbell last night as well.

My Bama friend is convinced DeBoer is taking it Sunday after they get beat by Georgia again.

Then we get Lane trying to back out of LSU and the **** show that's going to be.
The only thing that could make that scenario better would be Saban moralizing on GameDay about loyalty.

Campbell has talked to many people over the years, including other formidable suitors. The question is why they’re talking now, and the answer is probably that the regular season is over. I’m not going to read into it more than that for now. Sitake is in the friggin’ championship game and was still willing to hear them out in the meantime.

The Arkansas rumors gave me more anxiety because it was so out of left field it could’ve meant that someone or something had pissed Campbell off and a bridge had been burned (sorry, shouldn’t even joke about such things happening to The Bridge). But I’m with @SolterraCyclone, Franklin was fired the day after the Colorado game, and at that point I resigned myself to the reality that Campbell might take the Penn State job.

As for Kalshi, if I understand it correctly, it can be pretty misleading, because you’re just trying to get in on the ground floor of a boom. In other words, if Campbell’s odds went from 7% to 14% last night, how many people bet it afterwards simply because the odds doubled? It’s worth noting Sitake’s odds spiked too, yet I think a lot of people agree he was probably just using rumors as negotiating leverage from the start

Here is the only thing keeping me "grounded" with the whole CMC to PSU business

CMC is not the kind of man/coach to sign an entire recruiting class, and then dart for another job. There are a bunch of snakes in CFB right now, and you are seeing a lot of them come to light with the LSU/Ole Miss/Kiffin debacle. CMC is not one of those snakes

he literally agreed to be PSU's head coach. This wasn't a leverage play, BYU did everything they could to keep him and ended up being successful.

Okay, didn’t know he agreed. still think Kalshi is more for generating buzz and clicks than a predictive model

Folks, these rumors come from Tavern Hoks and K-state idiots who are self-gratifying to the thought of Matt Campbell coaching anywhere else.

Terry Pegula, owner of the Bills, is a Penn St alum and big donor. I think he wants Brian Daboll.
As of last night, Brohm was #1, and Daboll #2, however, sounds like Brohm is staying put also

Dan Patrick had a source this morning that said Pen St was going to go the interim route for next year and then go after a full time head coach next year.

Could happen and makes some sense but the AD won't have a job if that happens. His only lifeline at this point is hiring someone and that guy winning. If he doesn't hire someone or if who he hires sucks, he's gone.

The only thing that would save the AD is there is a tremendous amount of support within the program and the boosters to hire the interim guy

You do realize Bama is 9-1 over the last ten games against Georgia right? By beat them again do you mean like they did in 2022?

I’m surprised that Penn State isn’t going after Manny Diaz. He was the DC at Penn state and seems to be doing well at Duke. (Last year was better but he is in the championship game this year)

I’ve been checking out their boards and they act like they still might not make a hire until the conference championships are over. Which could line up with a Diaz hire if the AD is waiting.

So they fired their coach mid-season and still couldn't find anyone? That's a bad look if that's really how it goes down.

A couple thoughts:

1. I don’t think Campbell is going anywhere at this point. The way they handled the Franklin situation compared to the latitude he has in Ames plays a factor.

2. If PSU is legitimately interested, he’d be a fool to not at least hear them out.

We’ve had several scares already and Matt has stayed put. Feels like the USC interest was more real than we’d like to think.
If the worst case does happen? He gave us 10 good years and has the program in a great spot. And ISU has more clarity on what type of coach to target should MC move on.

People saying Campbell would not take the Penn State job are strange. They actually still believe in this day and age that a coach won't leave Iowa State for a better gig. Yes, I love my Cyclones but Penn State is a far better job than Iowa State. Way more money, Tradition, easier to recruit. Not saying campbell goes but I would not be one bit shocked. He grew up in Big Ten land. This is a prime job for him.

Seems like a weird choice to fire Franklin just to hire a guy that was his DC for a couple of the seasons that contributed to dissatisfaction?

Aside: I had no clue Manny Diaz was an HC again until the Cal win over SMU. It is so ******* hilarious he has Duke in the ACC title game while Miami stays home.

Those are all true.

However, at Penn State you can get fired 5 games removed from the playoff semifinal. He has a lifetime contract at ISU and has never won the conference championship game, let alone advance in the playoffs.

Miami is a really tough job now that they don't have their own stadium and have to play in Joe Robby (Forget who sponsors it now). Pro stadiums are sweet but don't lend themselves to a college atmosphere. Mix that with being in the ACC which is getting left behind. That job is hard. Duke has a ton of money for NIL. Most goes to basketball but they still have some dollars to get some players. Manny Diaz may or may not be a good coach. I still can't tell.
