We are little brother

Since 2018, I have been on the sidelines taking pictures for 27 P4 games between Ames, Iowa City, and Madison. What I have seen this year has convinced me that we are still little brother. Why do I say that? The fans.

Kinnick is far and away a louder and tougher environment to play than Jack Trice. "But JustBecause, its because their stadium is set up better for sound." You would not be wrong in saying that. The pictures below highlight the differences in spacing between the field and the fans at both locations. The fans in Kinnick are considerably closer. There are as many as 13 rows of fans behind the other teams bench before our first row.

But thats not what I am talking about. The 1st half of the BYU game was the first game this season, where fans were loud the whole time. And then the fans quit. We had a 4 point lead and it took 3rd down and the PA announcer to get people to stand up and make noise. Kinnick is loud even when they are on offense and they shouldnt be. With the exception of a couple of endzone sections, they stand the entire game.

I saw a number of people on twitter calling out the south endzone for only being partially full during the game and for good reason.

However the East side isnt much better:

Add in the West side of the stadium sitting on their hands most of the game and there you have it.

"But JustBecause, the team is playing poorly and they arent giving us anything to cheer about." No. Its our jobs as fans to create the environment and help them even when they are down. The first half of BYU showed what difference the crowd can make with 2 false starts in a row. In the second half, we were ahead by 4 points and couldnt be bothered to make noise outside of 3rd down. Its sad really.
You need to turn in your Cyclone card for a post like this. Don't you know that the Little Brother crap is a Squawk talking point? You should be ashamed if you call yourself a Cyclone.

Cyclone fans are far more civilized and classier than HOK fans. ISU is definitely not little brother.

I love how on the Iowa Everywhere Hawkeye post-game show, every time someone in the chat comments critically of the team, they assume it must be a Cyclone fan.

Yes, because that's exactly what they do, so assume everyone else does it too.

Our fans do pat themselves on the back way too much with a mediocre environment. Jack was never set up to be loud with the gently sloping seating distant from the field, but the fans also don't understand how to influence the game as sometimes its loud but not consistently at all. The elderly lady behind me, a very nice lady, once was wondering why people yell. She said, she didn't think it worked. She's right, it doesn't when only 30% of the stadium is making noise with the others just watching. It takes near 100% to make an intimidating environment that disrupts opposing offenses. I just wish I could take them all to one game at a loud stadium to see the effects. I also get annoyed when good calls or reviews are booed. Save the outrage for the bad ones to send a message, not just anything that goes against ISU.
Clearly I'm not sitting behind you. :D

I am not sure that having a crowd that is more civilized is the atmosphere that we want during a big game at JTS.

lol Hawkeye twitter it really running with the “almost beat Indiana and Oregon” narrative. It’s borderline erotic :eggplant:

Many of the current squawk fan base grew up during the 15 game winning streak and therefore just expect to beat ISU every time, like they did whey they were a young fan. Many of us older fans remember the 70s when it was ISU that was winning and EIU was getting beat by teams 55-0, the good old days.

Sorry part is I could root for Iowa, if they did not have so many douche fans that have to let everyone know they root for the Squawks. We went to the kids WBB game last year, 11:00 o'clock start, on the way out we see a father walking out with his kid, wearing a squawk hat. Its like I get it, you love your team, but nothing on that day had anything to do with EIU, so why wear a squawk hat to a ball game at ISU when they are not playing the squawks? Its like they have to go out of their way to scream "look at me and the team I support."
