We are little brother

Maybe I’m just old but I don’t like those old cramped stadiums at all.

Worst game day experience I’ve ever had was at Michigan. The Big House is the worst stadium I’ve ever been in and it’s not close.
Thirty years ago when I worked in Lincoln for a couple of years I went to ISU @ kNU at Memorial Stadium. To get to my seat I had to go up a staircase that looked older than the stadium itself and I could barely meet and pass another human on that staircase. The "seats" marked out on the bleachers were even narrower than the ones at JTS. What a terrible experience.

You sure you weren’t at Kinnick?

Id rather stand the whole game anyway. Arrowhead Stadium has 70000 seats and the only time people sit in them is halftime. When you have good fans that are into the game nobody sits down.
I have only been to 1 Chiefs game in Arrowhead. This was when Montana was playing so not terribly recent but I was about 5 rows from the back of the end zone and I can tell you nobody was standing the whole game.

So in my experience 100% of the time fans DON'T stand the whole game. ;)

No, people sit and then stand and sit again. If you have ever been to a game there, and they show the crowd on their feet its before a big play and can see the camera man using his hands motioning for the people to get up on their feet to enrich the shot.
We have been to over 50 games at Arrowhead over the years and we were sitting more than standing, just like at JTS, you stand for the big plays, and go back to sitting again.

I don't agree with the "little brother" assessment at all. I think that's total b.s., but good god dude we have posts all the time from ISU fans criticizing our crowds for big conference games. Other than the "little brother" bs he's pretty spot on. Iowa generally has to be in the dumps pretty bad before people quit showing up there or quit cheering. I seriously think some of it is just in our DNA from being lifelong ISU fans in that other than Iowa and Nebraska when they were in the conference that football is kind of "meh". We are the more loyal and close knit fanbase. Honestly most of my Iowa fans would agree.
Iowa State fans are - generally - more prone to shut up or leave when the team is really sucking ass. Hawk fans - generally - will stick around and be just as vocal just switch to booing their own team. Which one creates a better environment?

I'm not sure you can tell how rabid our crowd is when whoever is running the show the last couple years thinks "atmosphere" is "crank the video board up to a million". Honestly seems like it sucks the energy out of the crowd
Jackie is a total buzz kill. A lot of people don't want to make noise when she is doing her schtick because they don't want to encourage her.

Pollard, get rid of her! The PA announcer can do the things she does just like he did before this failed experiment! Hell it would even save a few bucks...

I get so sick of them doing the Kid Captain or Hero of the Game and they are trying to shoot the Kid and family or Hero and family and she keeps pushing herself into the shot. YOU ARE NOT THE STAR OF THIS SHOW!!! Know your place - you are just the emcee.

Also you get people fired up with a build up. When you start screaming at your second sentence of a 10 sentence spot you are failing miserably.

Iowa State is one of the worst-performing P4 programs in history. To me, the reality is that it's going to take more than six seasons of being competitive to completely change fans' perspectives. Campbell has raised the standard, and when fans feel a team is falling short and-or playing like the "same old" Iowa State, many are going to—somewhat rationally—say To h*** with this, I've seen it before. Kinnick isn't a top-tier environment, so both for the historical reason and for that reason I don't much care if their environment is better right now.

I do think it's fair to challenge the fanbase to aim to create a top ~20 football environment. Iowa State fans are known to travel well—at least considering the size of the fanbase—and to be passionate when they do. And others in this thread have brought up the fact that the Hilton environment is top-tier. So it's not unreasonable to start a discussion about the football environment. I just think it was done in a way that's not going to persuade or get a lot of people thinking.

Its been the norm under Andy Reid

The fan bases are completely different. Iowa has a huge % that are drunk, stupid, arrogant tavern hoks. Iowa State fans are just as passionate but not the loudmouth crowd…Many fans are ISU fans because we are NOT like that.

I do think our fans need to be louder on first and second down for defense. The next step our fanbase needs to take (from good to great) is creating big plays for the defense instead of just reacting to big plays on defense.

People that think it’s a good idea to have students behind the opponents bench should have seen the crap going on at TCU. Their student section is right behind the bench and their students were dropping f bombs and flipping the bird at our players all game. If that’s common practice students should be forced to sit in the upper decks.

I continue to be frustrated by the fact that the people in the south endzone, including the Sukup Club, and the public corners don't stomp their feet. The metal flooring is perfect for making tons of sound. I remember hearing Ben Bruns talk about it. Especially, when the opposing team has the ball on that end, we should make it "the most intimidating place in college football."

Come on, south endzoners. STOMP YOUR FEET.

P.S. The AD could make it happen quickly if they would just add a STOMP YOUR FEET slide for occasions when the opposing team has the ball on the south end.

Since 2018, I have been on the sidelines taking pictures for 27 P4 games between Ames, Iowa City, and Madison. What I have seen this year has convinced me that we are still little brother. Why do I say that? The fans.

Kinnick is far and away a louder and tougher environment to play than Jack Trice. "But JustBecause, its because their stadium is set up better for sound." You would not be wrong in saying that. The pictures below highlight the differences in spacing between the field and the fans at both locations. The fans in Kinnick are considerably closer. There are as many as 13 rows of fans behind the other teams bench before our first row.

But thats not what I am talking about. The 1st half of the BYU game was the first game this season, where fans were loud the whole time. And then the fans quit. We had a 4 point lead and it took 3rd down and the PA announcer to get people to stand up and make noise. Kinnick is loud even when they are on offense and they shouldnt be. With the exception of a couple of endzone sections, they stand the entire game.

I saw a number of people on twitter calling out the south endzone for only being partially full during the game and for good reason.

However the East side isnt much better:

Add in the West side of the stadium sitting on their hands most of the game and there you have it.

"But JustBecause, the team is playing poorly and they arent giving us anything to cheer about." No. Its our jobs as fans to create the environment and help them even when they are down. The first half of BYU showed what difference the crowd can make with 2 false starts in a row. In the second half, we were ahead by 4 points and couldnt be bothered to make noise outside of 3rd down. Its sad really.
I don’t agree with the little brother sentiment, but I do agree with we have a lot of room to grow as an in game fanbase.

We seem to know how to help the team in Hilton but seem to only respond to the the team in football.

would it be that loud? I would think the glass windows would kill the sound. Unless you mean the 20 people sitting outside? They might make a little noise stomping.

Geez and like read the room. I remember the start of the 4th quarter against BYU. Everyone was kinda frustrated and quiet as ISU started to implode. Next thing I know she starts screaming and hollering about a silly race between a person and a motorized helmet car. It was so ******* stupid and ill-timed.

Our fans do pat themselves on the back way too much with a mediocre environment. Jack was never set up to be loud with the gently sloping seating distant from the field, but the fans also don't understand how to influence the game as sometimes its loud but not consistently at all. The elderly lady behind me, a very nice lady, once was wondering why people yell. She said, she didn't think it worked. She's right, it doesn't when only 30% of the stadium is making noise with the others just watching. It takes near 100% to make an intimidating environment that disrupts opposing offenses. I just wish I could take them all to one game at a loud stadium to see the effects. I also get annoyed when good calls or reviews are booed. Save the outrage for the bad ones to send a message, not just anything that goes against ISU.
