What?Damn I thought this thread title was bad and then I noticed you quoting your own username and I immediately stopped reading.
I am not attempting to flex. I take my family to Ames. I have only been to Iowa City when ISU has been to town or when Im on the sidelines taking pictures. This isn't the flex you think it is.
My first game was in 98.Must have not gone to games in the 90's as JTS and the game day experience even for some of the "downer" games we've had recently is still a HUGE difference from where we were 20-30 years ago. The stadium actually looks like a power conference stadium with all the renovations and fans actually care about coming to the games now. There was a time we were a "drinking school with a football problem" where fans would rather just stay in the tailgate lots instead of go into the games or just not even show up at all.
The standard has been raised in the Campbell era. The sky is not falling and the sun still rises every morning. Bottom line is fans get excited and make noise when there is something exciting to cheer about and right now we're seeing some lackluster football being played at times. There are only so many times the PA announcer can try to rile the fans up with "get on your feet, it's thiirrrrddd dowwwwnnn!" only to have the defense give up another big gain and quiet the crowd and getting amped up for another third down grows old. I get pretty jacked up when the game is good but even I lose some enthusiasm when the play on the field sometimes is not matching the intensity the fans were bringing.
Oklahoma State is a prime example of how no matter how much Boone Picken's money is spent you can't buy fan interest when the play on the field is not good. I tend to believe our fans are better than that as they have stuck through some rough seasons over the years and still provided some memorable game day moments during that. The fans are not to blame for this current losing skid and the game day experience has become way better than it ever was in nearly all aspects. I don't really care to compare us with Iowa, they have the bigger stadium which helps but I think both fan bases have never turned on their school to the point where we went seasons with sparse attendance like you see at other schools when things go south.
Very old. And even in the 1930s we put a premium on punting... lol. Kinnick with 730+ yards of punting in the ND game alone.I believe it's like this because Kinnick is so old and was built before they put rules in place for how tight stadiums can be.
Lol I don't know what you're talking about. The early 2010s were absolutely awful. You are romanticizing your memories of that era. Go back and watch highlights. That was a small time atmosphere with no identity. We're still trying to find that, but the stadium and crowd is so much better than it used to be.Completely disagree with the ********, clickbait thread title.
That said, I do believe that the energy and environment at JTS leaves a lot to be desired so I don’t think the OP is completely off base with the general point they are making about the in-stadium atmosphere.
Compared to Hilton, JTS is a graveyard. It’s too bad we can’t channel some more of that energy for football. I was a student for some objectively worse teams than we are fortunate enough to have now, and in the handful of games I’ve been back for I’ve been decently disappointed in the crowd involvement compared to what I remember from the early 2010s.
If we’re going to pile on the OP, do it for the unhelpful comparison to UI and the thread title. In general, we need to stop comparing ourselves to TOE. They aren’t as relevant to us as some on this board make them out to be.
Great. I was asking as Jack Trice was getting ~102 for the Arizona game. I'll upload when I receive it. I believe the summary has a condensed timeline with specific highlighted sound spikes.Funny you should ask. I do have a screen shot from Kinnick during the Penn State game. I dont have the screen shot from Ames but we were maxing in the low 90s during the BYU game.

Haha, this is what it comes down to? Yes, IC is full of drunk idiots who've never spent more than a day in IC. Why don't you just go to a WWE event? Your idea of a football game sounds like something you'd see in a low-grade movie, not on an actual college campus. Its not just the volume. Its the attitude. Ames is a place you take the family for a nice afternoon out at a football game. Iowa City is where people go to get drunk and scream at football players.
I just want the fans to be loud on more than 3rd down and I dont want people to get yelled at for standing.Haha, this is what it comes down to? That was my freshman year at ISU but had been to a few games before then too. You should know as well as I do how far things have come since then. We had some pretty lean attendance some games especially late in the season. My first game was in 98.

Where am I wrong?
Since 2018, I have been on the sidelines taking pictures for 27 P4 games between Ames, Iowa City, and Madison. What I have seen this year has convinced me that we are still little brother. Why do I say that? The fans.
Kinnick is far and away a louder and tougher environment to play than Jack Trice. "But JustBecause, its because their stadium is set up better for sound." You would not be wrong in saying that. The pictures below highlight the differences in spacing between the field and the fans at both locations. The fans in Kinnick are considerably closer. There are as many as 13 rows of fans behind the other teams bench before our first row.

But thats not what I am talking about. The 1st half of the BYU game was the first game this season, where fans were loud the whole time. And then the fans quit. We had a 4 point lead and it took 3rd down and the PA announcer to get people to stand up and make noise. Kinnick is loud even when they are on offense and they shouldnt be. With the exception of a couple of endzone sections, they stand the entire game.
I saw a number of people on twitter calling out the south endzone for only being partially full during the game and for good reason.
However the East side isnt much better:

Add in the West side of the stadium sitting on their hands most of the game and there you have it.
"But JustBecause, the team is playing poorly and they arent giving us anything to cheer about." No. Its our jobs as fans to create the environment and help them even when they are down. The first half of BYU showed what difference the crowd can make with 2 false starts in a row. In the second half, we were ahead by 4 points and couldnt be bothered to make noise outside of 3rd down. Its sad really.

While I agree that our fan base in the stands could do better, they were a factor early in the BYU and ASU games, you lost your audience with your "little brother" BS. I agree the fans could do better and wish they would, I am not sure this is the right recipe to make change.Since 2018, I have been on the sidelines taking pictures for 27 P4 games between Ames, Iowa City, and Madison.
