Modest Proposal for Hilton Lighting

Many government entities can use cooperative contracts. When they use a cooperative contract discounted pricing is baked in so they generally don't have to solicit bids in that case. Every entity has different rules on that though.
It was a source of frustration for us when purchasing equipment for the lab. We had specific needs, and wanted specific features. Turn the request over to purchasing, and they would add all kinds of unnecessary (in our opinion) crap to the item prior to putting it up for a bid, and that generally resulted in a several thousand dollar hike in the bids, and having to pick a piece of equipment that was similar, but not the same. You could write a 10-page justification for why you wanted a specific item, and by doing that, sometimes you'd actually get what you wanted.

The "theater lighting" would work great at CHA though. That way nobody could see all the empty seats!

But yes.. the crowd is what makes Hilton a special place. It makes zero sense for Hilton to hide the crowd
99% of those watching on TV don't care about seeing the crowd they want to see what's happening on the court and this lighting creates a better stage for broadcast.

Bingo. Stage lighting is for TV presence, and TV doesn't care how dark the upper deck is in their broadcast/color balance/etc, because they aren't showing that anyway.

Meanwhile, people attending the games see...nothing different. 'Cuz it's not actually dark anywhere. It's perfectly visible inside. Only on TV does it appear not to be.

Specifically on ESPN+ or any other low quality ESPN production too. The games on main ESPN and CBS almost look like how it looked in the Hoiberg years.

Maybe this has already been said, but the old halogen fixtures that used to be in the ceiling at Hilton are no longer there and haven't been for a few years now. When they repaired and repainted the ceiling they were removed. The outer part of the ceiling that has the boards that are perpendicular to the ceiling still has the smaller can lights that illuminate the balcony.

I guess I'm a 1 percenter! I happen to like seeing the hilton crowd erupt during the big games on tv.

I just wish I was a 1 percenter in income rather than this!

Damn near criminal at this point.
On this note: did anyone else have an even worse experience with the ESPN+ player for the Northwestern exh. game? This time using the << and >> buttons on my remote would make it REW / FFW at the same rate as in the past when I pressed it once, but when I double pressed it instead of going at about twice the rate like in the past it jumped forward at an uncontrollable speed - probably comparable to the triple or quad press in the past. Then the play button wouldn't work to stop the REW/FFW and return to playing. When I tried to use the on screen controls it would repeatedly crash when I tried to go back to playing from FFW/REW. So I had to watch a replay without FFW through non existant commercials (empty commercial breaks).

Just when I thought the ESPN+ player couldn't get any worse... I can't believe I am paying money every month for this trash product.

Did you guys have trouble seeing the game with the old lighting? I think it's fun to see the crowd get hyped up it's one of the best parts of live sports. On tv it looks dark. And emptier with the new lighting somehow, even though I know it isn't.

It's not so much about trouble seeing the court as it is about just better viewing of the court. The more contrast between the court and area immediately around it and the rest of the stands/crowd makes it easier to focus, makes the colors pop more, is less distracting visually.

That may be but all the decision makers I talk to who push for this look are all about "The cool look" and keeping up with the Joneses.

Yeah my favorite part of watching basketball highlights is watching how the crowd behind the benches react. I try to go to as many games i can in football and basketball and I'm much more of an enjoyer of the atmosphere of games. Obviously I love watching Hansen go for a long run but I recommend people turning around from time to time just to take in the crowd's reaction. It is almost like a drug seeing all the happiness. I sit towards the top of hilton so at games it is fun seeing how the whole crowd loses their mind on back-to-back threes.
