G-League back to NCAA

I apologize if this has been discussed, but pretty great stuff from Izzo, who seems to be one of the few of the old guard holding on in this new landscape. Basically Louisville just added a guy to their roster who was paid to pay in the G-League for the last 2 years.

Seems like the floodgates could open back up for professional players who had remaining eligibility to return to college. You think of a guy like Wiggington who couldn't stick on a roster but didn't use up all his eligibility. Could be really interesting to see how far this extends.

There are sooooooo many underpaid guys in G league, Europe and even Latin Am and Asia compared to the outrageous bloated pro salaries NCAA transfers are getting.

If Josh Dix is worth 900k a year just a massive amount of young pro players around the world could get a 2-4x pay increase coming in to play pro college basketball.

I don't see how this is any different than Pleta
I think the defining factor is foreign versus not. Foreign leagues aren't NBA level, and most probably aren't even G-League level. Players in those leagues didn't really "skip college ball" to get to those leagues -- they operate differently.

Players in the NBA and G-League (who would still have eligibility left) likely chose to skip college time to get there. It's now forcing the NCAA to accept players who previously declined the opportunity to play in the NCAA. That logic doesn't apply quite the same way to foreign players.

(it's not lost on me that practically all of this subjective logic to the situations doesn't really apply in a court case against the NCAA -- I'm more just trying to explain how it's effectively a design flaw being pushed by that law system)

I get that but it does feel a little difference. Pleta was playing the German B division. It's just such a different setup overseas with their development system. This guy joined Ignite knowing exactly what it meant for his eligibility. He took a bag and knew that he was turning professional and giving up his eligibility.

Bingo. This could have the added effect of destroying the G League. In the NIL era, top college talent is making more money. Games draw more ratings and exposure. Plenty of reasons for G League talent to bounce back to NCAA for a year or two if the NBA plans didn't pan out as hoped.

The coaches make a lot more too. In many cases you’ll also get better coaching.

I mention to people that g league players are better, make 20% of college player salary and the only reason is the brand which is created by students/alumni paying to build it and often state tax payers subsidizing it. This is just hard fact but for some reason it enrages 90% of posters here.

Is this not what NCAA Hockey does? Are the Waterloo Bucks, Cedar Rapids Roughriders not a semi pro hockey league full of a bunch of high school graduates looking to attract the likes of colleges? Those kids get paid (granted not much I speculate) then they can go on and play for colleges.

Those kids don't get paid. The host family they get placed with gets a monthly stipend to help with basic needs but the kids aren't pulling a salary or stipend themselves..

If you were to ask me what school would a situation like this happen at and Louisville would easily be one of my first choices.

Bring back Royce White!

Someone should create a college league with amateurs. That’s a novel idea.

An acknowledgement that no pro sports leagues are made up of 100% single year free agents would go a long way. I go ballistic when people compare this to pro sports, it's nothing like pro sports. Ohtani can't suddenly decide on his own he's going to play for the Yankees a month from now.

Louisville, St Johns, Alabama or Auburn would've been my guesses. Although Pearl is gone from Auburn now....

Also, pro sports leagues have a draft, so there is some leveling of the playing field there. The Yankees can't simply outbid and sign the top 5 players in the draft class every year.
