Creighton exhibition discussion (see post 178 for Jake's link)

Who is freaking out??? Where is this supposed freak out? I watched a basketball game and made observations, good and bad.

This team shares many of the same attributes as the second half of last year’s team based on the bodies we have. There isn’t getting around that in my mind. Scrimmage doesn’t “count” but it sure as hell confirmed that concern.
This game is the equivalent of spring football game. Not going to make a bigger deal of it than it is.

lol.. we were national championship caliber last year until we lost the spacing he forces by simply standing there
He creates spacing but when he is not hitting he offers nothing on the court. Maybe him graduating was a little extreme but he is the exact same player as he was as a freshmen. Not athletic enough on defense and a streaky shooter that can’t create his own shot

Which threat from 3 would you hsve preferred last night?

I didn't watch, but I have no doubt the 2025-26 Cyclones will miss Jones' ability to just go off and Gilbert's intensity. Add in missing Lipsey's leadership and experience and last night doesn’t seem hard to understand. Hopefully, getting Tamin back and acclimating the new guys, especially the guards, will bring dramatic improvement.

Anybody remember Curtis' first few games? Heise's?

How does one exhibition game without out all American caliber point guard confirm your concern? Maybe TJ was having them do certain things that we have zero clue about, messing with rotations, taking lumps with the freshman. If this one meaningless game in mid October gets your this riled up it might be time to touch some grass.

What I don’t get is the Milan hype. Yeah, he can light it up at times. And he can dominate smaller or slower players. But man, our last two tourney losses he’s had some pretty ugly games. And this was another one. He’s not athletic enough to be a consistent scorer against good teams. Not saying he can’t score on good teams…when his shot is on, he’ll score on anyone. But when it’s not, he’s not quick enough to create shots closer to the rim.
I get the Milan hype and think he'll be a very good pro.But what I don't love is having the entire offense centered around one person, because if they're off, you have zero shot.

Didn’t watch. Someone give me TLDR version. I assume the little bit of drama and pissbaby reactions is overblown.

It’s a weird feeling having a basketball season end on October 17. Guess I’ll update my winter reading list.

And football ended last week (posters said the season's over) so different hobbies are certainly in order.

Lots of fresh faces that don't gel yet in a lot of ways. Most obviously on the offensive end. First half was pretty bad by most of the team, second was better.

Defensive end needed some help too for large sections of the game. Similar issues as recent years: overhelping or trying to set traps that don't connect, leaving lots of open space for threes by the other team. CREI hit a lot of those early on and start missing more in the second half, but the opportunities were consistently there. Didn't force many turnovers.

Points of interest to me: Toure looks like he can play, but is getting used to the game still. Think we have something with him. Pleta got more run than I expected. He's pretty athletic for his size, but is also trying to catch up to game speed and physicality. Nelson is a very physical player on both ends -- gets in contact and tight guarding defensively and loves to slash and truck his way to the rim. We need both -- but we also need him to stay healthy with these tendencies. He took a lot of hits.

Except it was very, very different than a spring football game. The equivalent would be playing an actual full football game - that in every single way mimic'd a real game played against a different school - but just doesn't count on the record.

The only newcomer we have that can make threes is a Freshmen who is probably going need some time to get comfortable playing at this level.
We need Heise and Lipsey to hit around the 35%+ mark this year so that defenses don't just collapse to stop Jefferson and only focus on Milan from deep. Heise started to show flashes of that last year which gives me optimism there.
