*** Official #22 IOWA STATE vs Colorado Game(Day) Thread ***

Quick reactions?
The defense did their job today. The offense put them in some bad spots and they responded.
The offense was offensive. Self inflicted wounds. Shot off 9 of 10 toes. Becht was blech. Offensive line was so inconsistent.
This team has lost all discipline. More penalties in the last two games than in the previous five.

Everyone was worried about the D due to injuries and yet they held up rather well. Why the offense has gone down the toilet is the harbinger of doom.

The amount of times the ball hit the receivers hands today and they didn’t come up with a catch was crazy.

Did the offense ever look good? It's been bad but basically right now it looks like what happens with lots of mistakes added in.

Noel and Higgins covered up some warts.
They tended to catch everything

Though Noel had some big drops in prior years (not last year) so hoping new guys can move forward and develop.

First drive if ball is caught on the slant it's a TD.

When you have plays called that puts the ball into end zone and you fail you leave yourself more opportunities for things like BAD penalties

What went wrong: Dropped passes galore, Rocco with fastballs for receivers 8 yards away, Rocco lousy pass for INT, good ol' give up the 3rd and long pass, short yardage Sama call from the gun on 4th down, 3rd and 10 QB draw.

What went right: OL play decent, Sama.

If the receiver is being pulled to the ground, that’s holding.

If it happens while the ball is in the air, it’s interference.

If the ball is tipped after the receiver is being pulled to the ground, it’s still interference.

The only way you wave it off is if the ball is tipped/touched before the illegal contact by the defender.

That's kind of the thing - EVEN IF it wasn't PI because the ball was picked off before it arrived at the spot where the interference was taking place and therefore uncatchable and the interference had no play in that... it's still holding because he was being dragged to the ground while the ball was still in the air.

I'm not saying that play cost us the game because we made far too many mistakes for that to be a legitimate excuse, but that was bad.

They lost as a team. I don't think we had a stellar game plan on either side of the ball. The defense let receivers get behind them. There was no edge containment on several of the sweeps. Our red zone defense is terrible. The offense's job is to possess the ball and score points. They failed. I didn't see any bright spots in the offense. Colorado's identity is of a team with a lot of talent that is undisciplined and not that well-coached. We were unable to expose that today. To their credit, they stepped up and played a pretty clean game.

Holding can only be called prior to the pass. After that, it's PI.

The one exception - and it was a big one - was the blown coverage to give Colorado a TD at the start of the 2nd half. That was pretty big.

The other 2nd half TD got a head start from Moore’s dumb unsportsmanlike penalty, so that’s not entirely on them. And the D did a great job holding Colorado to a FG after the turnover on downs at the 20.

Agree, I always get the feeling of doom whenever we get a chunk play and get tackled at the 12 trying to go in

At that point I just figure we won't score a TD..

Hate that feeling

The defense played like crap but it’s in no way their fault. They gave up 21 points (im not counting 3 from Mouser’s galaxy brain playcall). That should be more than enough to win this game. I’m glad Mouser kept his piece of confetti from the Big 12 title game becuase he’s not getting back there anytime soon. I mean that was just laughably bad today. 17 points against freaking Colorado.

I wasn't impressed. Sure he got some yards, but when we really NEEDED the yards, he wasn't there. Needs to improve.

I don’t think anyone tried to insinuate he was one to get the “tough” yards. But if he wasn’t getting his edge rushes today, ISU probably doesn't score 14 points.

If anyone watched that game and thinks our coaches cannot be questioned, you are the definition of a homer.

Between Rocco’s accuracy, play calling, and coaching decisions - it almost felt like we were trying to lose the game. It was that bad.
I said the same thing to my wife. They actually looked like they were trying to lose.

Pretty good against the FCS team...

Nothing surprising on the offense really. Campbell continues to throw inexperienced kids into the OC and other offensive coaching positions. The defense has been bailing him out for years, but injuries have taken that away now.
