Cyclone FB players - what could have been

Think it was more on the o line. He was really good if he could get the time to make a play but I think was on the run a lot because we didn’t have squat for an o line.
I thought I recalled some talk that our tubby OC micro-managed him and ruined his confidence.
For the old timers, it's Jerry Moses. It's not even close. He was considered one of the best Iowa athletes ever, along with Nile Kinnick, gary Thompson, Dan Gable, and Bob Feller. His NIL today would be millions.
My dad would agree with this.

Berryman may be the best player I’ve ever seen in person. For those who didn’t have a chance to see him, that’s not hyperbole either. He was frightening.
His performance against Iowa in 2005 is the single most dominant game I’ve seen without recording an official tackle. IIRC all he had in the official stat line was a fumble recovery on a shotgun snap that sailed over Drew Tate’s head. He had to have recorded 10+ pressures and 5 qb hits in that game, just unstoppable.

He was also an extremely small DE to wreak as much havoc as he did.

“Money” Reynolds was another high rated recruit that turned out to be a nothing burger.

Who was the huge lineman we got that came in highly touted but didn’t want to put in the work? Hunter Deyo was it?

We have a deep tight end position but DeShawn Hanika definitely passes the eye test seeing him resurface for Kansas this year, as he did when he was at ISU that year we struggled as a team.

Don't believe he lasted long here...but who was the OL commit (from somewhere in AZ I think?) that announced he was coming to Iowa State by putting an ISU flag on his pickup truck and doing donuts? It was awesome! Feel like he had some hype to his commitment?

Yes. Got "demoted" from DL to OL and quit. Transferred to Bowling Green didn't last a semester.

I was thinking back recently about Bo Williams (RIP) that had big time hype and had a long run against A&M. He fizzled out quickly.

Who are some Cyclone FB players that you thought were going to be stars but didn't pan out for whatever reason (injuries, grades, bad teams, etc.)

A few that came to mind:
Sedrick Johnson: big time recruit that never panned out and transferred.
Sam Richardson (QB): had a breakout game against KU, but struggled due to O-line.
Jason Scales: highly touted coming out of high school, but struggled with injuries
Jason Berryman (RIP): couldn't stay out of trouble.

Any others that I'm missing or before my time? (I was at ISU from 04-08)
Iowa State had 5 running backs committed that year, and Scales was the worst ranked out of the 5. Webster Patrick was the high ranked running back that I’m not sure even made it to campus that year.

Put it this way.

Tony Dorsett played RB for Johnny Majors at Pitt, won a title, Heisman, everything. Went on to the NFL and was ROY, all pro, Super Bowl champ. CFB Hall of Fame. NFL Hall of Fame.

Majors said Moses was better.

I wrote about this very topic for WRNL wayyyyy back in the day. My three choices were Jerry Moses, Chris Boskey, and ... (surprise!) Jack Trice.
I would have to go with Jerry Moses as well. He was to Iowa high school football what Dan Gable was to high school wrestling. Moses might have been even more dominant. I don't know what happened to him at ISU such as was he just hurt a lot or did he turn out to be a step to slow?

This was way back (2003 I believe). Iowa State received a verbal commitment from a Florida HS safety named Brandon Owens, which would have been the first 5 Star recruit (by one service) for Iowa State. He eventually decommitted and signed with Minnesota. Would have been the same class as Berryman, Blythe, Meyer, DeAndre Jackson.
He had a career ending shoulder injury his Sophomore (?) year.

Hurt a lot and then had a bad knee injury. Was never the same, sad. I think he had offers from Alabama, Nebraska, Notre Dame and a host of other power houses.
