No. 14 Iowa State travels to Cincinnati to play the Bearcats on Saturday at 11 a.m. Ahead of the game, both teams released their first Big 12 injury report of the week.

There was some nonsense talk about strength and conditioning, but I do wonder about the 3-3-5 and it’s sustainability throughout a long conference season. The higher percentage of responsibility for run stopping on our defensive backfield probably has at least some impact on the injury report.

With both starting CBs out, 3-3-5 will be a permanent thing. No choice, now.

Some metrics nerd somewhere probably has a stat for tackles made by DBs as a percentage of overall team tackles. I’m guessing we’d be among the leaders, but I have no numbers, just pulling it out of my you know what.

Cooper was hurt during a non contact drill in practice and KCC and Jontez were injured on down field plays they would be involved in for any possible defense we could play. I think you could make a case that our Star safety takes more pounding since he is the alley defender on so many run fits, but our current big injuries don't seem to be scheme related.

Taylor was running with the 1's before Cooper moved to corner. David Coffey got lots of hype from the outgoing seniors and many thought he was a candidate to start. We will be okay. Also, this gives the opportunity for some of the freshman to get an increased role in spot duty.
