That was when they were at 12 members. It’s surely not a coincidence that Notre Dame also got AAU status with sub par research numbers and USC got to be chair of the AAU right after they joined the B10
Well ND isn’t in the big ten so not sure how that correlates also USC has been in the AAU for close to 60 years and while you think there is some bias out of the 13 board members and president only 1 of the 14 is currently from the big ten.
The cope on this is very strong
They are kinda in the B10 and it’s no secret wants them in the B10.
There’s still no reason for Oregon to still be in the AAU if they voted out Nebraska and likely told Syracuse and Iowa State to leave or be publicly voted out.
Won’t get any push back on the Oregon stuff, they are an outlier for sure.
Also totally agree the big ten would love ND but they aren’t really “kinda” in the big ten anymore. Before the ACC partnership when they were regularly playing MSU, Michigan and Purdue the sure. But most of those series have been put on pause so the connection isn’t really the same.

Ahhh good call. Yeah the non revenue sports gets weird lol. Think John Hopkins is even a lacrosse member.
With the changes to NIL and international players I could see hockey slowly climbing up the value ratings overtime as it becomes a true feeder program to the NHL. I’m personally a big college hockey fan which is why I’m annoyed I didn’t get the ND reference for it.
And saying AAU is some sort of measuring stick to the quality of said University is certainly a choice too.
Its a pissing match between good ol boys that set their criteria for membership then decide which of those criteria they want to enforce and not enforce for which University.
I think even you realize that there are spectacular schools out their that are not members of AAU. That there are spectacular schools out there that dont have a medical program. That there are programs that spend as much or more in research dollars than many of the AAU schools, but dont fit the good ol boys club because they decided to enforce their criteria for said school while letting others pass.
It is similar to the so called committee for the CFP, they say one thing one year, then the next year, something else. One year this data point matters than the next that it doesnt.
AAU is nothing more than a popularity contest by good ol boys, that decide what and who is popular and for what reasons.
Calling it a cult may be a reach, but not that big of one, but it for sure is nothing more than a club full of beauty pageant winners voted on by their group of good ol boy former pageant winners.
I was really disappointed that ISU made the decision to leave, but I then spent more time looking at the mickey mouse, kangaroo court, club full of self righteous wind bags that pick and choose who and what they count from one year to the next, while completely overlooking others shortcomings in their own organization because...... reasons.
And if ISU was still in and was in no risk of losing their status I know you wouldn’t feel this way and have this take at all. That’s why I said cope.
Yeah there are good schools that aren’t AAU. ISU, Syracuse and FSU off the top of my head. But man when you look around there really aren’t many of the good-great schools out there that aren’t included.
Does it really matter more then just being another accolade, no not really. But it’s a good status to have and if I was ISU I would have fought to stay. I know that’s a can of worms due to the states attacks on education but there are only a handful of schools that once had the status that left willingly.
Probably, I can agree there, partly because of ignorance of the program itself. I never would have looked that much into it if it wasn't for us leaving and being disappointed we chose to leave.
If you are in the good ol boys club, the popular kids click, you often are oblivious to the hypocrisy happening under your own nose.
Its branding is most important to fans of fledgling schools that otherwise aren’t considered “academic” schools or notable in any way.
It’s not a metric that attracts undergrad applicants or one at play when asking people to list prestigious schools. Or even good schools.
It’s not even terribly important to graduate applicants given the school’s strength in the particular program is much, much more critical.
Although it’s not a requirement for the BIG, it’s an easy way for them to curate the social club they desire.

Yeah, I can’t say anyone in Ag gives a rip about AAU membership at any degree level. We make fun of Cornell as snobs and ones who wouldn’t fit into Midwest culture. An ISU ag degree is held in high standards at any place I’ve dealt with.
Assuming the audience knows what you’re talking about, which most do not, it has brand value, that’s it. And it’s limited even in that.
Take USF. Many on these forums disparaged them as a school despite those actually informed knowing they were going to achieve AAU designation. They’re still the same school in late 2023 as they were in early 2023, except to those that have heard of AAU but are otherwise ignorant
And USF will continue to be disparaged as a value add to P4 because it will remain a commuter school with a disengaged alumni base even with AAU and a new stadium. No diffferent than the mistake the B12 made with UCF.
Oh I was laughing at your Cornell reference. Yeah I’m pretty sure an Ivy League grad from New York isn’t fitting into most Midwest cultures. Weird thing to flex on

As for P4, they will soon be in the P4 unless the Big 12 can kill off the ACC when FSU and Miami go to P2. ACCN alone will get them the nod

Cornell is supposed to be upper New York and they want to give off a rural vibe (more of what I meant when I said Midwest), but come across as the band camp dude who accidentally ended up at football camp.
First they have to say Cornell at Ithaca and not Mount Vernon, Iowa. I had started the app process then saw all the hoops you had to jump through and decided that I was probably going to ISU anyhow.
