Glacier national park

The end of Avalanche Trail (portrait mode for file size). It was sunny and 88 degrees out on Going To The Sun Road when we parked- 2.5 mile hike in to Avalanche Lake and it was cloudy/stormy looking and 62 degrees.
I remember getting to the Lake and we saw a bear swimming on the far side of the Lake. There were probably close to 100 other people there and one guy commented "we won't have to worry - there are 100 people here with bear spray so if he dares to come here, he'll be a little bit spicy".

I replied "But how many really know how to use the spray though?"

And old lady overheard our conversation and she said "I don't - me and my husband were just told to bring the bear spray but we have no idea how to use it".

I have come across plenty of tourists like this- bless their hearts. I had a Chinese woman follow me around on Johns Lake Loop because I was open carrying my 10mm.

She finally asked if it was a "real gun."

I informed her that "The handgun was real"

West Glacier has plenty of "Family" friendly trails. One of our favorite easy /moderate trails is West Glacier's Johns Lake Loop. We did have an occasion to run into a young bull moose on this trail. Unfortunately, it was on a hike when I did not have my camera. McDonald Creek is one of the attractions of this hike. If you cross the Horse Bridge and "Head East" or to the right, after crossing the bridge, you will be headed towards the back country. Sacred Dancing Cascade is a must see. As the Spring runoff subsides more of the granite is exposed- creating better photo opportunities. View attachment 150448

A female moose in the runoff slough of McDonald Creek- the trail will bring you out by the overlook platform. You will be on the opposite side of the creek.

McDonald Creek during a typical Spring run off. If you look across the creek the Back Country Trail will bring you out right over there. You can then proceed further North up the creek. For some reason the Overlook image will not insert. The overlook platform is about a mile North on Going To The Sun Road from Sacred Dancing Cascade. The last image is of the McDonald Creek Back Country.View attachment 150459

We took an early morning trip to Virginia Falls. I wanted to hike back into Virginia Falls and have my camera gear setup before the sun rises. Virginia Falls is located on the East Glacier Side of Glacier National Park. We entered the park on the West Glacier side at about 3:30 am. We drove The Going To The Sun Road up and over Logan Pass. The hike back into Virginia Falls was going to begin in the dark. The first image was of the sun rising on us as we were racing towards Virginia Falls.

The 2nd image is of Virginia Falls. We made it before the sun bleached out the tops of the trees.

Once I had completed the photos of Virginia Falls, we started heading back down the trail. We encountered several falls that I wanted to take photos of on our way back to the car. I call this image "Below Virginia Falls" because it is on the same water flow as Virginia Falls.

A Little further below the previous water feature, we encountered this nice little shady area.

While we were on the East side of Glacier we decided to drive to the "Wild Goose Island" overlook on St. Mary Lake. It was a nice calm day so the reflections were perfect on the lake.

Bowman Lake, North Gate, Glacier National Park. Yes I stopped at Polebridge and sampled their wares, i.e. cookies, huckleberry bear claws, etc...

We like to go out to Lake McDonald Lodge in the winter time to hike on Going To The Sun Road beyond the barricades. I saw this image and scene and I captured it. It has been cropped to fit the upload file size.

We were there in 2009 and spent a few days. We're not hiking people, so stuck with what we could drive or do a short walk.

Horseback ride
Boat ride on Lake McDonald
Going-to-the-Sun road
Logan's pass - some easy trails to walk there
Bowman lake. At the time we found a gravel "road" to the lake and took that instead of the paved highway. It took us 3 hours to drive 30+ miles (I think) and was totally worth it. We saw some beautiful scenery. Sometimes the road was one lane.

Pics are of Bowman lake. It was amazing to stand in water up to your knees and clearly see all the colored rocks below your feet.

It sounds like you drove up the North Fork Road. It can be a regular washboard from all the dump tricks that run up and down it.
