I can see why the Dbacks signed him. They have an extremely cheap rotation with good talent, and some great pieces on offense that are young and under team control. I think it's a great move for them. They should try to win while Goldschmidt and Pollock are there.
The Diamondbacks stadium has a retractable roof for that very reason. It's actually very nice in there on hot days (which is pretty much every day in Phoenix).
Those numbers are gross, but you could also look at it like every Dbacks fan has to pay $20-$60/year for an ace...it doesn't look so bad.
The money in this deal IS absurd, but I don't thing a lot of people realize that he had a 1.66 ERA last year in 200+ innings, and that is absolutely absurd as well. His ERA last season was almost a full run lower than any ERA Randy Johnson ever posted in his career
He still has to walk though the parking lot. I'm sure he could just make a suit out of hundred dollar bills to make him feel better.
It won't get any better, either. Hopefully, Samardzija will have more success than the last time he played for a Bay Area team. SF needs Cain to return to form after his ailments from the last two seasons and probably resign Leake, hoping he will snap out of the post-trade doldrums. Still want to see another starter added to the roster, though. Pitching was the achilles heel last year, so I'm hopeful that (enough) answers can be found without breaking the bank.
