Wrestle Offs

149, 157 & 174 may not get settled until Southern Scuffle. I will be shock if Redding is the guy at 133. His shape was real good considering the cut. Physically, he looks better than 2 years ago.

Some of my notes from wrestle offs..

125 - knopick and fuessley made me wish we only wrestled freestyle and no more folkstyle. Kysen is the man still but is going to deal with weight cutting this year.
133 - Redding is the man. I have talked about him a couple times on here and not giving up on him just yet. He looked great and I can't wait to see what happens with him and Ramazan. Also excited to see if Noonan can throw his hat in the ring there. Whoever is the guy will be r12 to low AA type.
141 - Casey is tough as nails and so is Frost. Anyone who pays attention to Iowa hs wrestling shouldn't be too surprised by this. I always thought those boys were under ranked nationally. Frost is solid in every position and will be a great Cyclone for years to come. Casey is definitely sucking weight and is going to have to move up eventually I think. He will be fine once he adjusts, not worried in the least bit.
149 - great match both guys are competing for the spot and I love to see that. Cam looked great (props to coach Durbin on the strength gains for Cam). Paniro with an escape and takedown for the win in the last 10 seconds. Cam knew he blew it too. This one isnt over.
157 - we will see what happens, area of growth.
174 - Broderson looked great. I wish some of the other guys would use some of his offensive set-up tactics. Lots of drags, slides, pull, shuck, snatch, sweep... He's fun to watch and still has a lot of growth I believe - if he wants it. That match was fun to watch and Broderson just got out scrambled there on the edge. MJ isn't even weighing 174 and looked really good and relaxed. His trajectory is stright up. He is a 165 wrestling up at 174 right now. It will be interesting to see what happens with these two as the season goes on - add in Joel.
184/197/HWT - as expected, nothing needs said.
Does anyone know if Evan Frost is hurt? I would love to see how he does with Redding/Ramazan.

I think if the mat was regulation size, Casey gets a couple more takedowns on the edge too. Some of those shots he was in on were slick

I was surprised the ref called that one OOB with I think 1:30 left in the match. You’re right though. Loved seeing Frost in the fight he’s one I’m going to enjoy watching grow and develop. Ian Parker type in almost every way

The 285 story. Duggan was a little dinged up early, then Schon sprained his ankle in the 29 second fall. Schon is Out for about 3 weeks. Also is doing great with grades now, but had some work to do to get eligible, so won’t compete until 2nd semester.

They totally planned on wrestling Schon through all the wrestle offs

Thanks for the information.

I don’t think I’d let a kid wrestle off that didn’t make the grades… but maybe that’s just me. Hoping he heals up, gets his grades in order and has a productive redshirt year.

The ref made some flat out bad calls. We’re it a real dual he would have been hearing it.

key takeaways from me:

Redding - he looked great. Cabanban is no slouch. Redding kept the pressure on for the full 7 and dominated. If he’s doing the right things and has the weight under control it could be a big year for him.

Swiderski - needs to get the weight under control. He was sucked out and just didn’t quite have the power to get his finishes. Needs a few more times getting down before we’ll get a true gauge where he is.

49 - this weight is unsettled. To me Cam looked like the better wrestler for 6:50. Credit to Paniro for pulling it out. This was a physical and high paced match.

74 - Gaitan is small and inexperienced, but showed his competitiveness, athleticism, and creativity on the mat. I’m buying every bit of stock I can in this kid. Redshirt this year, but think he’s the guy at 74 next year.
