Would you turn it in?

If you found $1M in cash on the road, would you turn it in?

  • Yes, it's the right thing to do.

  • No, finder's keepers!

I trust my ability to be smart and careful while navigating a situation entirely new to me much, much less than I do the skills of whichever agency (or gang) is tasked with resolving this type of situation. Turn it in so none of it is on my conscience.

Yep, I'd turn it in. Not only is it the right thing to do, I am not lucky enough to get away with it lol
I've tried to live by the same rule I taught my kids: If it's not yours, LEAVE IT ALONE. Sure, that kind of money would tempt most people, but the guilt and the fear of repercussions from either the law or the (probably) criminal owners would weigh most people down eventually.
I'm with these guys. It is the right thing to do. And the potential repercussions of keeping it would reinforce my initial decision.

Yes in this case. Assuming you could tell the rightful owner.

If it was just a paper bag with no identifying characteristics, I'd probably tell the police I found cash, and let me know if anyone reports it missing.

The police won't let you keep it you know. It's illegal to take something that's not yours even if you don't know who the owner is.

If my kids were in the car with me when we found it, I’d have to turn it in. Not because it’s the right thing to do, but because there is no way I could trust my kids to keep it a secret. Especially my 2nd grader. He’d be telling his whole class within the week.

If it was just me and the wife who found it, I’d probably try and keep it somehow.

Yes. turn it in. For me it's just a personal philosophy. If I didn't earn it, and deserve it then it isn't mine and I don't want it, not even tempted. Nice and simple and easy.
And there is the practical consideration that it's really hard to spend large amounts of cash without drawing attention, There aren't that many businesses where you could launder more than $1000/week.

You would not have to spend it right away; a million dollars would buy a lot of stuff over the next 20 or 30 years. Things like utilities, groceries other items are purchased with cash always. Seen many an Amish down here grab a roll of cash out of their pocket and start peeling them off to pay for things.

I believe in many states (including iowa)it would fall to a 'finder's keepers, unless the owner is found'.

Legally you'd have to report it to the police, but if no one came forward to claim the money after a reasonable amount of time (a year in iowa), it would fall back to you after a period of time.

Of course this might depend on the police being honest and not claiming it was drug funds and seizing the cash or something.

I feel like odds of something being attached to it negatively would be high and that it would likely follow you or cause you to always feel off. I'd be looking over my shoulder and always wondering who's watching or who it actually belongs to. Like another pointed out, something illegal attached to it and someone will be looking for it. Just wouldn't be good for a person's health.

I'd lean turning it in because I likely wouldn't want any part of it.

I feel like you haven't thought about how nerve racking it would be to steal a million dollars and then sit on it for a year, not to mention the paranoia there must be if you try to start using it in a way to avoid the FBI. That sounds worse than having a million dollars.

steal?

I think that's true, but I don't think the police let you keep it during that period of time.

Oh I know know where we could easily launder more than $1000/week. I know a couple who own a strip joint, flea bag hotel, funeral parlor, and casino.

Mcblogs nudey bar would be very profitable despite its lack of talent and overpriced drinks.

I think I'd be more likely to keep it if I found 10k. But a million? Someone is gonna be looking for that. Whether it's the police or a mobster, I'm out.

It is interesting though. I like to think my integrity would matter but if I'm honest, I pry keep it if I think I can get away with it.
