Woodworkers Thread

It may have been mentioned throughout, but where is everyone buying their hardwood lumber from?

Woodsmith Store. It can be a bit pricey but they have a big selection and will cut everything down for you at no charge if you want. They’ll also sell you partial boards as long as you leave at least 3 feet behind.

If I need a random piece of oak or something I’ll hit Menards because it’s closer.

Man the Woodsmith store seems crazy expensive when I've looked. Awesome place to window shop lumber, but I've never bought.

If you can find a good sawmill I'd recommend it. If you live in Eastern Iowa Twin Oaks in SW Wisconsin (near Sinsinawa Mound) is great. Great selection and prices and really easy to work with. Since I've moved I haven't found a great source but need to.

Depends on where you live. I generally buy mine from Wieland and Sons in Winthrop. I'll make a run down to the woodsmith store if I want some non domestic hardwoods. Bell Forest Products is a good online source.

Unless you're buying a very small amount like a short board, go to Liberty Hardwoods in South Ankeny.
I’ve never bought from there....I thought you had to buy a fairly significant amount of board feet as a single buyer? If you’ve done it, what’s the process to buy, can you just walk in?

Finally completed a woodworking project. It's been a while. Don't tell my wife that I'm more productive when I can't watch sports.

The built ins below are Phase 1. Next Phase is a desk which has started to replace the cheap Walmart desk you see a bit of in the picture.. Phase 3 will be upper cabinets/shelves above Phase 1.

Irony says I'll get the desk done shortly after I go back to work and don't work remotely anymore. Reality says sport come back and I'll finish everything somewhere are 2037.

Very nice work. Did you make the plans yourself, or do you have a program to design them?

I wondered if they were still selling any to individuals or whether it was all going to cabinet makers.

I have bought a few times from liberty hardwood. You set up an account and can call in your order. You can't "pick" through the wood, and you can't order specific sized lumber (4x8, 6x10), but rather order by board foot. I think they have good prices, and good selection of lumber. They do carry sheet goods 4x8 sheets of quality plywood for furniture/cabinet building.
I would highly recommend Liberty Hardwood if you are looking for rough cut lumber.

No minimum amount of bf? Seems like I can easily find suppliers locally but they always want you to buy like a 100bf minimum. My shop is my garage. I ain’t got that kinda space!

That’s where I like the woodsmith store. I can go in and pick through the lumber to get the length, width and thickness that I want. I can also sort through any warped boards or unwanted splits or knots.

Even if I’m going in to spend 100 bucks or whatever I like to pick through what I’m buying.

I honestly completely winged this one. Like barely even sketched up something ahead of time. Cabinets are just making boxes so it isn't too bad that way.

But to be honest I also had a lot of problems along the way more due to not having a lot of time with woodworking and therefore doing a little bit of the project and then picking it up again weeks or months later. I'd forget where I was and then have little issues as a result. A plan would have helped there, but also if I would have just pounded out the project in a reasonable time I would have been fine too.

Phase two is a desk. I'm doing a better job both planning and documenting things I decide in case I don't pick it up again for a while. I'm also guessing with no sports etc I'll have less times I put it down and don't pick it up for a long period of time.

Normally I just call ahead a couple days before I go and they have it pulled out and waiting on me with no minimum. Granted I normally but 15 or 20 BF at a time.

No minimum on board foot as far as I know. I have ordered as little as 20 BF with no issue. Keep in mind that it is not finish planed. I have them plane to 7/8 and straight line rip one edge. Give them a call. They are easy to work with.
