Williams & Blum: More Cyclone Therapy

An irrational market is still... the market. Personally, I see no end in sight. For the Big 10 schools - and probably the SEC and some others, this is absolutely sustainable.
Agreed. Just this year Michigan state got a $400 million donation. We can never compete with that.

IMO, that level of waste of money is disguising. You could do so much good with that much money.

Honestly I walked away from that pod thinking my shelf life for college sports is coming up. I barely pay attention to anything outside of ISU/Big 12, but it’s hard for me to care about anything outside of ISU anymore. Definitely a bleak future.

That is how I left it at......

And then I see Iowa Everywhere talking about how the big12 is overrated....that's helpful!

I couldn’t agree more. Why should i show up at a game when the cards are stacked against us. So pitiful how they are ruining college sports

I'll play the other side of the doom and gloom. The rumors flying around is that President Cook has gotten some corporate sponsors involved with NIL that were not previously. In the NIL era, Iowa State mens basketball and football have had some of their best stretches in school history.

I’ve heard similar. Wendy was a good President, don’t get me wrong but Cook seems like the right guy to lead us in the new era. Still hard to care about anything outside outside of ISU, but he’s been making the right moves so far

The school or the AD?

I would say the AD. But I don’t know enough to know whether that’s possible to only target the athletic departments. I understand they are technically non-profit, but I feel they skirt the spirit of that designation.

Yeah, Blum indicated, somewhat passively in a prior pod about some potential game changers as far as NIL was concerned. Haven’t seen it mentioned here so this must be it.

Surprised to hear we have no involvement with Casey’s. Maybe it’s their policy, but headquarters down the road would seem to be a no brainer. Gotta get companies like that involved.

Yea I’m tired of the doom and gloom ******** that gets pumped through Cyclone Fanatic pods right now. Iowa Everywhere is the the same way and it’s all because our last 4 months as an athletic department has been pretty much a disaster. The local media just piles on the winner.

CW and Blum are still jaded by the Campbell fleeing. I’m sure they will come around and get us some spring football coverage eventually but the pendulum has swung pretty hard. We need some wins soon to get everyone off our ass. Hopefully CJR can prove everyone wrong. I’m pretty damn excited for football.

Seems like we're in a decent spot within the Big 12. What's scary is the funding that Big Ten and SEC schools have compared to everyone else, especially in football, and it's starting to show.

I’m right there with you. The whole system is flawed and it gets more disgusting by the day. Haggerty from KSU is moving on to his 5th school! What are we doing?!? God bless the 4-year guys like Lipsey, Niang, Naz, Monte, and Matt Thomas. They’re a dying breed.

Guys like Campbell left for jobs like Penn State long before the NIL era. I don't know why Hassel can't let it go. He talks like he's rooting for Iowa State, but it certainly seems like he takes great enjoyment out of pouring salt in that wound, as if it signifies the demise of our entire University.

Campbell staying as long as he did should speak to the strength of ISU's athletic department now instead of people using his departure to make it seem weaker than ever. Chizik left after 2 seasons of 5-19 football. It could be far worse.

Hassell is an ass hat.. he loves dogging Iowa state any change he gets just like his dad.. he’s your typical Iowa fan.. good therapy again. I’ve going to start a new game next week counting how many times Blum says.. “C -DUB” & “Footbowl” in one episode..

Tough but honest listen. It keeps pushing to me to pro sports where things are somewhat even....

Can you imagine the NFL where any player is a free agent every year and there is no money cap? That's essentially what we are allowing.

I do wish they would have talked more about how TJ does recruit guys that care about loyalty and that not everyone chases the almighty dollar.

Sounds like we need to do "Moneyball" for basketball - multiple low 4 star high school recruits. Figure the established players and 5 star recruits are getting the big money.

Every player should be exploring the portal every offseason. Same way we all look at other jobs. This is the new structure. I think our new President is aware of this reality. Pollard needs to get there.
Once you put your name in the portal don't be surprised if your not invited back.

Sports is nice and all, Seeing how Cook handles the challenges of a legislature that is hell bent on destroying 4 yr colleges will be the thing that really determines if ISU, UNI survive. There are enough Hawk legislators to carve out exemptions to make sure Iowa doesn't get screwed to badly.
