WBB Recruiting continued...

I knew he was not adverse to ten, but I did not know he was interested in walk-ons. I cannot recall the last time we had walk-ons. Have any ever played a significant role?

Brittany Lange was the most recent walk-on. No walk-on has played any really significant minutes, but they usually play about as much as Mosman, Florzak, and Lightbourne have this season. The most significant was probably Sarah Robson, who earned a scholarship as a senior in 00-01 after walking-on three seasons. I'm not counting Anne O'Neil, who I believe was a walk-on during her transfer redshirt season, but only because ISU didn't have an open scholarship for her.

I'm glad BF is looking at having walk-ons. We need at least 12 players on the roster.

Thanks for the info, MRed; in essence there has not been a walk-on with much impact since Robson, about a decade ago. Not sure what to make of that.

Well, I don't think there's as much need for walk-ons as in the men's game due to the two extra scholarships. They also have guys they practice against, so I don't think they're hurting for bodies to practice against either.

There are some marginal kids out there that might forgo a small college to be on the team at ISU. Look at Jocelyn Anderson, she was not recruited and went to a JC. We need to find a big diamond in the rough for some protection in case one or two of our big people go down or hit a sophomore slump. OR... heaven forbid transfer. Just think what our post play would be if Ashley Arlen would have stayed. Christorpherson is a big question mark. She is playing in the smallest class of schools and it will be a big jump for her to the Big 12. I am glad that BF is at least considering walk-ons.

I asked BF on his call-in show about the roster #'s for next year; he will stay with 10 but is still looking at several prospects. He's not that concerned.
I also asked him about 2011 and the abundance of in-state talent; he said there are several prospects in central Iowa and beyond (we all know the names) that he has been recruiting for some time now, and hopes the hard work pays off.

The coaches see these gals in AAU games against the best of the entire region. They know what they are getting.

BF said he is always happy to have walk-ons, and it's largely (most years) to help with team chemistry. They are an example to the scholarship players of what it means to work hard and play for the love of the game. The most they are ever expected to do is hold down a few minutes in a game when needed due to injury or fouls. I think our star walk-on was Abby Reinart?, and she only got in the game to mop up a comfortable win. But if I recall, she was co-captain her senior year and was very popular with fans and players.
One question came up about a Register article about a decent h.s. player enrolling at ISU. He said he saw the article, and it is always up to the player to approach the program about walking on, but that he is always glad when someone does.

Kandice Beeken was also a very good walk-on. I think that she may have started a few games in her career.

Anyone know anything more about this?

It was posted by someone on another board a week or two ago. Lindsay Hoehns of Twin Cedar is going to ISU but as a student only. Would be great she were interested in walking on but no mention of that in the article. Kinda new to this board, hope I figure I got the linky thing right.

She is only 5'-9" and plays the front court in the smallest HS class. Might not have the size for her game skills in college? She is also a standout in volleyball and track so she is a real athlete.

Here's what I have for walk-ons since 97-98. I do not guarantee the accuracy of this.

97-98: Sarah Robson (fr)

98-99: Sarah Robson (so)

99-00: Sarah Robson (jr), Sara Stribe (so) -- Stribe was a redshirt transfer from Drake. She was a walk-on due to not having enough scholarships. She was outstanding at both bb and vb, and played vb during her redshirt season. She decided to stick with vb instead of bb.

00-01: Mindy Sywassink (fr) -- played one season at ISU, then a year at Kirkwood and two at James Madison. Robson earned a scholarship for 00-01.

01-02: Nina Smith (jr) -- redshirt transfer from Wisconsin. Walk-on due to not enough scholarships. Transferred to Holy Family after her redshirt season.

02-03: Kandice Beenken (fr), Susan Sherman (jr) -- Sherman was a thrower for ISU T&F, and walked-on for one season for post depth when Nina Smith, Melanie Bremer, and Kate Bauman all transferred away.

03-04: Kandice Beenken (so), Abby Reinert (fr)

04-05: Kandice Beenken (jr), Abby Reinert (so)

05-06: Kandice Beenken (sr), Abby Reinert (jr)

06-07: Brittany Lange (so) -- Lange was a redshirt transfer from Creighton. Reinert earned a scholarship for 06-07.

07-08: Brittany Lange (so) -- Lange became a student assistant after recurring injuries forced her to give up basketball.

08-09: none

09-10: none

EDIT:
Updated 01-02 and 06-07 based on info below.

She doesn't seem like a typical walk-on. The only real question is whether she wants to play basketball. If she's interested in walking on, it's a no-brainer to take her.

I agree, usually the weakness of most walk-ons is their speed, or lack of it. So if she decided to put in the work, she might actually be someone who could improve her way into real playing time. Hope she decides she loves basketball and Hilton Magic:smile:

Edited my post above to add that she is a standout in volleyball and track. That's a lot of sports for a young gal who is also an A student. Maybe cutting down to just hoops might not be out of line for her goal of concentrating on academics?

Did Nina Smith actually left the program but stayed @ school and BF decided to honor the scholarship ? Not sure what really happened to her.

I thought Erica Junod (sp) started as a walk-on.

I'm pretty sure she wasn't. She did redshirt her freshman season after contracting mono. Her (first) freshman year was 99-00, which is when I was thinking Stribe walked on because of a lack of scholarships. I suppose it could have been Junod that walked on instead, but I don't recall that being the case.
