Are you sure that there wasn't something wrong with the machine? I have never seen a clothes washer that didn't at least have cold, hot and warm settings.
I would recommend a front load washer. They are more money, but they do a much better jobn of cleaning with less detergent, and they also get your clothes much dryer than top load washers. I have a front load Kenmore that must be 7 or 8 years old and I have been very pleased so far.
