Washer/Dryer Suggestions

USA made. Just like Whirlpool, Maytag, Amana, Frigidaire, GE, Roper, Hotpoint, Admiral, Estate and I'm sure many others I'm forgetting. If that's you're only selling point you'd better keep trying.

As for price and performance, if you are talking top loaders (I assume you are based on the $600 price you quoted) the highest rated Speed Queen is rated only "fair" by Consumer Reports and costs more than FORTY EIGHT of the models rated ahead of it.

Maytag is no longer in Newton. Maytag closed down in Galesburg, plus Herrin, IL and in Arkansas. Maytag's are made in Mexico and all the Galesburg jobs, 1,500 or so, left Illinois for Mexico. Amana is no longer in Amana. Should I keep going?

Walk into any laundromat. What do you see? Speed Queen. They take the abuse.

May cost more because they are made in the USA.

From the website: Made in America and refined for more than a century, our innovative technology and proven performance deliver the reliable operation you’ve come to expect from the most profitable brand to own in commercial laundry.

Ask Whirlpool where they make all or nearly all of the models now since they bought Maytag, Amana and more. I couldn't find Made in America on the Whirlpool website.

Ask in Louisville where GE are now made? Overseas.

Go ahead buy Mexican or Chinese. I say buy USA.

I just bought these:

WHIRLPOOL WFW94HEXW washer (#1 in Consumer Reports)
WHIRLPOOL WED94HEXW dryer

$1599 TOTAL from appliancesconnection.com, which was $800 less than Sears. Came via freight, which took almost three weeks, but it was worth it to save the money.

We went with the WFW9150 and Sears in Mtown matched Best Buy's price ($499) plus 10% of the difference (another $12 or so). They also price matched the pedestal my wife insisted on getting. I can't believe how expensive those are. Half the price of the washer.

Thanks for all the input. Here's hoping the dryer lasts a few more years:)

Blame the unions.

If your wash room is not on cement, I would not get a front loader. Mine is on a wood floor and even after buying four $20 vibration eliminators, my whole house shakes when the spin cycle is going. The clothes come clean and the lack of water use is nice, but the windows rattling is enough for me to wish I had gone top loader.

We told our repairman we were considering moving our washer/dryer to the upstairs from the basement. He said to make sure it's on a reinforced area of floor (like load bearing wall) or we'd have the problem you described. Apparently that's pretty common.

I just turned my spin down to medium, put rubber skid pads under the feet, and spent an afternoon making sure the thing was super level.

Front loaders are so much more easier on clothes, wash them better, that I would never go back to a top loader. Not to mention, I love the counter I installed over my washer and dryer.

I'm sorry, but I'm going to buy the best product I can get for my money, no matter where it's made.

Sears (with price match from Best Buy) was cheaper than both of those with delivery/installation/removal included.
I don't know what model you were looking at, but when I bought them a month ago the price I got was over $800 cheaper than Sears. There was no way they could touch the price I got. In fact, I've never found Sears to be real competitive price-wise on just about anything.

But they price match. Their advertised price was a bit higher (not much really since they had a 30% off sale) but they will price match anything you can show them from the internet. I looked up the pedestal on my phone and showed them and they matched that. I'd rather buy locally if I can and it's close to the same price.

Does that vary by location? My local Sears told me they would not match an internet retailer.
