Match 10 of 14

The US travels to Canada tomorrow (Sunday) for their 2nd match in this 3 game international window. The English language broadcast will be on Paramount+. If that’s not an option for you, it will also be on Universo/Telemundo in Spanish.

A US win would put them in first atop the table. At this point, the top 3 are basically fans of whoever is playing Panama.

Mexico will play Costa Rica in Mexico, Jamaica travels to Panama, and Honduras and El Salvador will face each other.

Canada has a team? I can’t remember ever hearing them mentioned before in any previous threads about WC qualifying/CONCACAF, etc.

Even more surprised to see they’re on top of the table.

Their rise has been ridiculous. They have rarely even been in the final round of qualifying in recent WC cycles, but that team is full of young, talented players many of whom are playing well in Europe. Their star player is Alphonso Davies who moved from Vancouver in MLS to Bayern Munich and has become a worldwide name. Fortunately for the US, he isn’t with Canada right now due to myocarditis complications from COVID.

They've been quickly improving due to an influx of some really talented younger players. Their defense has tightened up and their keeper played a great match against Honduras. Davies is their stud, but he has been out from Covid complications.

Beating them would be a really solid win.

Canada wouldn’t let Weah into the country. Doubt he would have started all 3 qualifiers anyway, but it still sucks.

Weah has been our most effective attacking player the last few games, so this is a big loss. Unless he refused to get the second dose, this seems like a failure of the staff. They should have had this taken care of well before we got to this point.

Cave **** likely. Actually it sounds like he got one dose, then caught covid between doses and that counts as vaccinated where he plays so he didn't get a 2nd dose ever but Canada requires full vax.

Roll with Aaronson and have Tim ready for Wednesday. There was probably going to be some rotation anyway, so we can manage.

I don’t know all the details, but there’s a possibility that Canada has updated their entry requirements as the pandemic has progressed. If there was a change fairly recently, there might not have been much the US could do planning wise. Ideally you’d like to think they would be encouraging the players to all be fully vaxxed and boosted to avoid an issue like this.

He’s had one dose of the vaccine and was planning on getting the second but got COVID which delayed him getting it. That doesn’t meet Canada’s entry requirements so he didn’t travel.
Duh. I knew this. Thanks!

Hornet’s nest situation imo. Have to withstand the early onslaught.
The next 180 minutes are going to be two physically and psychologically demanding matches for the squad.

I’ll be curious to see how Herdman sets Canada up today. In the first match in Nashville, he had them really sit in deep and dared the US to try to do something in attack. They are capable of playing a more wide open, attacking game so we could see pretty much anything
