Thermostat recommendations

I have no dog in this race but just had to step in to say how much I appreciate CF for just not a place to obsessively discuss college students playing sports, but to learn about things that I've never even known people even discussed, like thermostats.

Oh for sure. You can search back and find all kinds of discussions on various home items as well. I'm pretty sure we've had a couple threads on the best toilets to buy as well.

I am kind of in the same boat. My wife hates the cold and has an in home day care. Thus our house is set to 72 24 hours a day in the winter. Due to that we aren't gone all that much and generally not for longer than a couple of hours max. Would a nest even be worth it with those variables?
72 deg 24 hours a day?
Does she wear a sweatshirt? I keep ours cooler and we wear long t's or sweatshirts.
And no way could I sleep that warm, probably 75 in our 2nd floor bedroom if the main floor is 72.

You are a good man.

It varies what she wears (giggity). We live in a raised ranch so the upstairs is 72 while the basement is 60. Can't decide if I want to try and get more insulation down there or not. FWIW in the summer it is set at 78 or 80.

Maybe next year I will push to go cooler at night at least but with a baby right now it wasn't a battle to fight.

We got a Honeywell touchscreen one that is programmable and hooks up to WiFi. We can adjust the temperature from our phone. I think we got it on sale for like $80.

I would like to purchase a Nest but don't know if it will be feasible for me. I have a boiler and hot water heat and a separate central air. Please let me know if anyone has experience that would help me.

Not sure how a water heater factors into the equation - your home thermostat doesn't typically control your water heater. As far as a separate central air - that's kind of how it works.

Our nest came with the new Lennox furnace we had installed last fall. It's nice being able to control it from our smart phones. Also, our cats don't cause much of a problem.

He sounds like he it talking about hot water heat. So he has a boiler that circulates hot water around the house. Not sure if he means baseboard water heat or if there is a newer method of circulating the water. Don't they do that in floors as well?

Bumping this thread because I noticed my energy company offers a $100 rebate on energy star smart thermostats. I'm leaning towards the Nest Thermostat E unless anyone can convince me otherwise...

I had a new hvac system installed this fall. The best thermostat feature is the IAQ feature. If the ac or furnace doesn’t kick on for 20 minutes, it’ll kick the fan on for 5 minutes to circulate the air. Has made a huge difference in keeping a consistent temperature throughout the main floor and basement.

Have a nest now. I miss the one that came with my Lennox setup at my last house that was like a tablet that had the forecast and the outdoor temp on it.
I’m interested in hearing more about this one. We have a newer Lennox heat pump and I was looking into a Lennox WiFi thermostat but haven’t heard much of anything about them. Currently we have a Honeywell that I’m particularly not fond of.

Ditch the furnace and get yourself a wood burning stove. It has 2 settings - freeze your a$$ off cold or roast your face off hot. Very simple. AND if the wife or kids want to jack with the temp just tell them to go out and chop some freakin wood. That takes care of that real quick.

. I don’t need lots of bells and whistles. Thanks.

I know you said "basic", but imo, you should consider an ecobee, nest, or some other smart device. Our ecobee sent me alerts that our furnace was having problems. Turned out my igniter was going bad. It would still light about 1/4 of the time. Would have gone unnoticed with a dumb thermostat.

I just have the butler or maid turn our temp up or down as needed. We just text 15 minutes before we arrive and they adjust. They can add clothes during the day while we are gone.
