The ESPY's

How does it exactly take courage for a rich, has-been celebrity to get a sex change? It doesn't. People have getting sex changes for decades, and the community Jenner lives in would have embraced him fully.

If you'll actually take the time to research sex change operations as a clinical treatment for gender confusion, you'll find that it is no longer receommended by many professionals, since the research shows that it doesn't solve the underlying problems. Jenner is likely doing more harm than good. At least some are now having the courage to take on the LGBT war machine and speak out.

Granted, I don't follow this other than what my wife tells me, but last I heard there weren't even plans for Jenner to get the operation, she was just identifying as female now. So, if that's still the case, then it's even less courageous.

I'm sorry, because clearly you have a much more informed and nuanced opinion on transgender issues than I do, but why would the degree of any surgery she's elected to have make a damn bit of difference?

end of story is they could have chosen from dozens of other people that were more "courageous". Fact. However they wouldn't have gotten the viewership had they don't that. That's why they did what they did. Like it or hate it, its the truth.

There are a lot of different measures of courage, but other than that, you're spot on.

The flip-sides of your fact are:
-dozens of people could justifiably be given that award every year
-there are multiple different kinds of courage and saying one is 'more' than another is wildly subjective
-despite what some meme-happy posters would have you believe, there is not a finite amount of courage, nor a finite capacity to recognize courage in this world
-ESPN surely picks a recipient that they think will garner the greatest publicity/ratings every year (not just this one)
-this was a 'controversial' pick mostly amongst people who have decided to have a problem with her personal life decisions and have no willingness to hear what she has to say about them.

Maybe ESPN didn't put UAB-ISU up for Best Upset because, deep down, they knew that ISU-OSU football deserved that award in the 2012 ESPYs.

What did everyone else think about Lebron winning the Best Championship Performance award? He didn't even win the championship. All the other candidates did.

I wanted American Pharoah, the horse, to win it. That horse did something that hadn't been done for decades and decades. Other championships are handed out every year.

Would have enjoyed a victory speech from the horse

I thought it would have been kinda cool if they opened up the curtains and the horse was standing there.

But hey, let's just give it to someone that didn't even win a championship this year instead.
