The Deion Sanders thread

As far as NIL goes, this is the one thing where it CAN help a non-blue blood like Iowa State. Say we can't get a bunch of spread out money for a whole class of kids, but maybe we can sink it all in on a top-5 QB. That player may never have looked at Iowa State in the past, but perhaps our single pool of money (yes it's not from the school I know, but we all know how this is going on behind closed doors) from donors can be enough to trump the big dogs and get him here to Ames.

This just happened with this Jackson State situation we are talking about. I know Deion Sanders helps, and we don't have him. But Campbell and co. have already been shown to be able to develop players, so he can always do that. But being able to maybe get an elite player at QB or another high-impact position (defensive line) can completely change a team's ceiling.
Not a believer in money ball, I see.

I’m not optimistic our pooled money would compete with the booster and corporate money elsewhere for a top-5 qb

No idea what you are talking about with money ball, as I never said I believe in anything or not in that post. Just pointing out how a small school just bucked the whole "blue bloods will get every big recruit now" line of thought, and MAYBE it happens to us at some point.

We shall see what happens won't we? Because fun fact, none of us really know. That includes you almighty one. Although you definitely like to act like you know everything around here.

This kid just went to Jackson State for a reported $1.5 million. We do have enough big boosters that SHOULD (key word) they want to pool money to throw at an elite recruit they absolutely could. Might be enough to land one, might not.

The kids are doing nothing wrong, hell, I'm happy for them but this specific situation is sleazy.

If there was no barstool connection, it wouldn't feel as bad IMO.
What's more sleazy about this than other NIL deals? Aside from you not liking Barstool.

Do they even have an actual sports journalist there anymore? 99% is buzzfeed meets tmz stuff
If you ever thought they were actually about "sports journalism" then you simply missed the point. Now I undestand Barstool isn't for everyone, but they have always been okay with that fact.

NIL is a freaking farce, but it's our new reality. Whether it's Portnoy, booster, etc. there are going to be people running the show that are likely NOT the people any of us fans want running the show for the long term health of college football.

I'm going to laugh when these companies get 0 return after dropping 7 figures on an unproven 18 year old.

I keep seeing return thrown about but define what you mean by return.

If I was a rich donor the return I am looking for is getting the best players here. If I did that I'd be happy because I am giving the coaching staff the best players to work with.

Having it all intertwined with alumni and tax payers who had a large part in building these brands creates a messy situation.

For years people have been saying “pay them what they are worth”. Most of them only have marketing value because of the name on the jersey. It’s only about 20 of them a year where it’s the other way around.

They’re already getting returns. Guarantee this is driving traffic to barstool today

I checked out a few FSU message boards but the story didn’t lower my IQ into becoming a barstool fan.

That’s me though, I’m sure you’re right about that in general. Whether it’s worth a few million, time will tell, but certainly it created buzz.

And that number may even be high considering what some of the NIL deals are being reported as. Good post here out of you.

I just don't think they have the influence to clamp down on anything anymore and NCAA only has themselves to blame
Yep. So long as Lincoln Riley and Brian Kelly can jump to a new school and start coaching immediately, you're going to have a hard sell trying to say that players shouldn't be able to have similar freedom.

This is what happens when the pendulum swings. Blame the NCAA and the member schools. Their greed and obstinance did this.

Someone could try to argue that it’s disruptive to education but it seems non athlete students switch schools or stop before graduation at least as frequently.

If they can just have the pre covid transfer rules it would bring the instability down a lot, probably no way to ever make them more strict. The transfers still get to be on scholarship while sitting out which helps argument quite a bit.
