Tetris Championships

This is insane. I can barely keep up watching these guys play. Can't imagine how many hours you have to put in to get to this point.
The Tetris tourney scene confuses me because there seems to be many regional tourneys throughout the year. According to the Classic Tetris World Championship site the espn event's payouts were as follows.
1st: $3000
2nd: $1500
3rd-4th: $750
5th-8th: $500
9th-16th: $250
Not bad for 1st or 2nd. Nice that they pay down to 16th.
I was at the Replay FX event in Pittsburgh last summer, which included the National championship of Dr Mario. I had a few hours to kill before the Tecmo Bowl tourney that night and entered in the qualifying rounds of Dr Mario. I had no shot against even the mid level players.
However Dr Mario is a game I enjoy very casually on the switch.
