Summer Shootaround '24 - Iowa State

Thanks for the post Hines, that was an excellent listen. A lot has to go right but it's also possible. Listening I was influenced by your statement that Norlander wasn't as high on us as Parrish, but also found it intriguing that once all the cards were dealt Parrish might have been a shade over his skis. Either way it looks to be a fun season and we will once again be devastated by each loss and put too much into some of the wins. The way TJ's teams play we could have a worse record than last year and still have an opportunity to go farther in the tourney. Let's hope the football team exceeds expectations and then bring on the hoops--I can't wait.

These next 22 days are going to be the longest I can remember as an ISU fan. Both because the football team should be great, but also because basketball should be absolutely electric

Parrish is right when he said if this team had Duke, North Carolina, or Kansas on the front of the jersey, no one would be debating on if this team was a top 5 team.
I think that's definitely true. Part of the issue is also that this team is balanced enough that there isn't a clear headliner for people to notice on the national stage.

I looked at how many games each player led Iowa State in scoring last season. Here's what I got:
Gilbert: 9 games
Lipsey: 9
Momcilovic: 7
Curtis Jones: 6 (Assumed all of the "Jones" games on ESPN were Curtis and not BRE)
King: 4
Ward: 1
Watson: 1

Compare that to Alabama (Mark Sears led their scoring in 26 games) or Kansas (Dickinson led in 20), and it's a lot easier for national guys to sell and talk about those teams than it is Iowa State.

I'm going to make a strange prediction for this year's team. They will be seeded lower in the Big 12 Tournament than they'll be seeded in the NCAA Tournament.

More a reflection of the conference than Iowa State.

I wouldn't be shocked at this.

I'd even go on to say they could be a 3/4 seed in the NCAA tournament. Doesn't mean they're worse than the 2 seed they got, but just the accumulation of losses in a TOUGH Big 12.

It has been said by others in various threads, this team could be better than 2023-24, but a lower W-L in regular season. The non-con high-end and at least some of the B12 rotation (and two additional conference games) is more challenging.

Conference standing will depend mostly on what Dishon Jackson is in January (and maybe JT Rock?). Gotta have bigs inside to grind out 2 games a week for 2+ months.

Tournament, guards dominate more.
