Ugh. I can't stand the shorter seasons. Longer seasons give us more ability to get to know the characters, have side stories, etc.
Without the longer seasons of TNG we'd be missing a ton
Even 12-14 felt short to me, but certainly better than the 8-10 of recent.
I don't need 26 (there were definitely a few episodes a season that were clearly actual filler like the clip show episodes), but while they say things like "we were just trying to fill 25 episodes" in that article, that doesn't mean all of those were bad things. They'd try a lot of things, some of them would hit and some of them wouldn't. Decreasing the number of opportunities to do something new doesn't guarantee you just get the 'hits' and drop the 'misses'. Some of the best episodes ever were episodes they went and told a side story. Inner Light. Lower Decks.
Plus the long breaks we have now in between seasons. Used to be a full year of shows, a few months off, then back with another 26 episodes. Now its 10 episodes (if that), and then wait a minimum of a year to get more. So your total content per year is even less.
I'd like to get back up closer to 20. Even if there's a short break in the middle somewhere
This "8-10 episodes, 2 years off, 8-10 episodes" thing so many streaming shows have gotten to is just unenjoyable.
I do hate the long breaks in between these things. You always threaten losing your momentum too. Granted, the actors and writers strike only made the absences that much longer this go around on shows. SNW can't come soon enough.
Just finally finished Discovery's final season and all I can really say is meh, which has kind of been the same story for much of Discovery's run. That isn't to say there hasn't been any good seasons as I really did quite enjoy S2, but everything post going to the future has been majorly lacking in my mind. While a lot of it is the writing for sure, a lot is just simply the characters as well. The cast is just full of a bunch of duds that either annoy the crap out of me or are simply just bad. Michael Burnham has at least improved some as the series has gone on and her dynamic with Rayner is the best part of this season. However, she still remains my least favorite Captain. Rayner is great and the only person I want to see more from the show. Everything Adira, Gray or Hugh is just awful to the point it is painful any time they are on the screen. I still like Saru. Paul is ok at times, other times not so much. Booker is meh, but overused. Reno and Kovich are both fun but very limited roles. You get the gist. It's hard to have a good show when a third your cast is terrible, a third is ok at best, and only the last third you somewhat enjoy. Another sad part was how underutilized the bridge crew was in this show who, in such limited screen time, were immensely more enjoyable than most the cast they focused on. Rhys, you are the best and don't let anyone tell you differently. When you stepped into the chair for a bit this season, I was all in for you.
With all that said, I'm glad I toughed it through the season to at least see the show through its conclusion, but I won't miss the show at all. Strange New Worlds is so immensely better than this show it isn't even funny. I'd also be lying if I didn't say that the fact that Tilly seems to be involved in the new Star Trek Academy show, as well as it being placed in Discovery's current timeline makes me immensely less excited about the show. I hope to be surprised. This whole timeline will somewhat forever be tainted for me with that stupid "burn" storyline, which was so so stupid. Anyway, those are my thoughts on Discovery's final season. I hope many of you enjoyed it more than me.

I hate to say it, but Strange New Worlds might be the best Star Trek show ever. I like every single character and their backstories. I can't say the same for other Star Trek shows. They always had some hit or miss characters, or just some really annoying ones. Even TNG was victim of this. Also all the old shows had some real cringy/goofy storylines here and there (probably a result of needing to fill so many episodes).
I havent seen S4 yet, but i mostly agree. Its been great.
Except...
making MBenga into a navy seal level murder machine on space cocaine seemed... ludicrously unrealistsic and totally unnecessary. He is an interesting character as the doctor and i like how he is played too. But that whole backstory bit was just beyond dumb.
She’s not really my type (although La’an is) but her look was so uniquely cool and futuristic, now she seems more like someone from our time.
Pike’s hair is out of control like the evil rich people in hunger games this season, it was always a little out there but at times this year it’s like they’re making a joke of it.
Maybe too far that he’s some legend known by all Klingons as opposed to like Kira on DS9 was formerly a freedom fighter/terrorist but not some galaxy famous killer.
Yeah I thought she was nearing Tricia Helfer levels of hotness and now I think the Irish girl is hotter. You’re right about Pike. It’s out of control at this point.
I mean the dude knows he has a horrible fate ahead of him. I'd stack that hair high
I'd also volunteer for his ship. Because we know how Pike goes. So the ship is never in real danger of blowing up or anything
I almost literally ROFL-ed in the outtakes of the 'The Last Frontier' when alt-Kirk
tried to lift his leg over the back of the ridiculously high captain's chair (a la Riker) and destroyed it.
My only complaint is we only get 8 to 10 episodes per season, overall it's the best Star Trek series they have made. Solid cast, great special effects, and only one or two clunkers for episodes.
