Speed! A deep dive.

Was he though? I don't think so. He was fast, but let's not lose our minds over it.
Jaylin had wheels and his burst was the most impressive aspect, but I don't think he has the speed of Eskildsen or Overby (6'5"). I think his speed is comparable to Karon Brookins (6'5")

He showed signs in 2021 that he had the ability to extend the defense and had similar in the return game.

Where that was in 100m or vs. teammates in a 40, not sure.

Yeah. He ran a 4.39 at the combine. What receivers in school history were faster than him? Can't be more than 1-2, if that. I doubt any receiver on next year's roster is actually faster than Noel.

There are probably two, maybe three that are faster. Eskildsen and Overby for sure. Brookins, maybe.

That would be awesome, but I'm not buying it. Noel was 10th in the 40 for WR at the combine. No way we have 3 guys currently on the roster that would have been top 10. There is a 0% chance.

Townsend will look like the fastest guy on the team this year, fwiw
Townsend’s highlights at UCF look like a guy with elite burst but not top end speed. I’ll take burst every day over top speed but I will be slightly concerned if he’s taking the top off our defense consistently in practice.

He routinely takes the top off our defense in practice and is consistently blowing by guys. He will/should be our best offensive weapon this year

On the topic of speed... used to work with a guy that had been 4A HS coach, had won a state title back in the 80s. His son played HS football very successfully at a pretty high level, and went on to play at Coe as a CB. Parents had connections at Coe.

I was talking to the dad, and asked him what is the difference between son going to Coe vs say Iowa or ISU? Size, speed, what? And he basically said if he was a few tenths faster then D-1 would have been an option. It was that close - just boiled down to running maybe 0.2 faster in the forty.

Speed kills.

I remember standing along the line as the ISU football team walked in one year and was kind of amazed that up close many of the players weren't much different in size than D3 players, particularly what appeared to be receivers/RBs/DBs types.

I knew some D3 players that started at Iowa or UNI and probably would have eventually gotten some PT but would have had to wait vs. being able to play right away at that level.

Even NFL skill position guys aren't that big. The difference is athletic ability. What's the average NFL corner, like 5'-11" 190lbs? That's the average adult male in the U.S. Receivers aren't much bigger. I think people would be surprised at how short NFL running backs are in person too. A lot of 5'-8"-5'-10" guys.
