Special Teams

Props to our special teams for practicing the proper levels of social distancing on the field today.

We need to be using guys like Hunter Zenzen and Cole Pederson on kickoff covg and punt covg (and other linebackers who aren't playing much). Good athletes with speed who like to hit. Head scratching we had too many plodding TE's out there. Like what is Dylan Sehnor doing out there? He's a great TE but not his place..

We need to use our best athletes out there as the aggressors to set the tone. We were absolutely soft in this phase.

I think Rose is on kickoff too. So he gets a good wind sprint in before playing a series.

Just saw this about Lazard following bad special team kick coverage by The Pack.

“We gotta be better with our lane integrity,” Packers head coach Matt LaFleur said Monday of Cannon’s return, “I’ve gotta give Allen Lazard a lot of props. He went right to (special teams coordinator Maurice Drayton) after that and said, ‘Hey, that’s not going to happen again. I want in on the kickoff coverage unit.’ And you see Allen busting his butt and he’s the first one down every time, so I think that speaks volumes to what kind of team player Allen Lazard is.”

The uprising of ISU football in Lazard's senior year was such a fun thing to watch and a lot of that was obviously because of guys like him.

For me, the low point of how inept our special teams coaching really is was the second onside kick attempt.

I'm good with the concept. Line drive the ball into the turf right in front of one of their players. Betting that a lineman out there to just block will not be able to hold on to the ball and we recover the fumble.

Who did our coaches tell our kicker to drive the ball at betting he would muff it?

Trestan Freaking Ebner! The guy that housed the kickoff return and tourched us on punt returns.

Whomever picked him to be our ***** should be fired immediately from working with our special teams! That is just flat out incompetence, lack of preparation and situational awareness ffrom our coaching staff.

Didn't read whole thread, so sorry if repeat.

If I was coaching Kansas (LOL) I would tell our kickoff returner to stand about 7 yards deep in the end zone. If you can catch it without jumping, return it! Sure, you will likely get tackled inside the 20 most of the time, but there's a decent chance you can house one or at least get a long return. Our kick coverage has issues, and likely isn't in a good place mentally. Beating us on special teams is likely their only hope.

Same thing with punts. Return them all, or at least try.

I would say we should just kick out of bounds on kickoffs, and let them have it at the 35 each time, but a smart opposing coach should ask for 5 yards and a re-kick. Do that until they get to return one or take possession at the 45 or 50.
