I am taking my kids to the Smokey Mountain National Park next month. I have never been there, what are some of the attractions I should visit and what would my kids like? They are 9 and 14. What kind of hotels are in or near the park?

We were there a month ago and had a great time. Beautiful area and I assume you're staying near Gatlenberg, which is basically connected to Sevierville and Pidgeon's Forge (where Dollywood is). The kids will like Dollywood which has some great rides. In Gatlenberg I'd go up the tram at the end of the strip that has the skating rink at the top with some other kids stuff, then you can go up a 2nd chair lift for an incredible view of the Smokeys. You can ride that down on a go-cart type vehicle that looked like a lot of fun for the younger than me crowd. Otherwise the whole area is full of go carts, miniature golf, and shows similar to the Dells. Knoxville is also 40 miles away if you want to see the Tennessee campus and football stadium, which was old but very cool. I wish the Clones would get a road game with the Vols sometime for a great road trip in the fall.

I should add that there is every type of chain motel you can think of plus a ton of others in the 3 city area, a lot of them on mountain streams that were very cool. I'd google the Tennessee visitor site to help make up your mind. The motels were incredibley cheap a month ago but probably will be up next month after school is out. Staying in Sevierville may be a little cheaper and you're still only 2 miles from Dollywood and 10 from Gatlenberg.

My wife and I may be going there in early July, so I've been doing a little research. If you are there on July 8, you could go see Weird Al in Knoxville.

Weird Al Yankovic on 7/8/2010 at Tennessee Theatre in Knoxville, TN on JamBase

The pictures of the theatre he is performing in look nice:

Also, there are some great cabins for rent, which I think would be much better than a hotel:
