Smoke/CO Alarms

I decided against the sealed battery version of the one I linked above. I had not read good things about the 10-year battery life. I put those in in summer of 24 and have not had a dead battery beep . . . yet.

Either my family is at serious risk or I'll get a beep tonight :jimlad:

Either way, I should check into it.
I can't decide if I'm happy or unhappy that I got AA-battery backup ones versus sealed. That said, since I have the most annoying one down already, I guess I might as well take this opportunity to replace all the batteries in them now anyway. Don't know how long to really expect the backup AA's to last on a wired smoke alarm. The OEM advice tends to be replace them every 6 or 12 months.

I've seen the permanent battery versions of alarms be stated for 10 years, but actually only last anywhere from 3-7 years in reality, then you're stuck buying a completely new unit.

Really wishing now I tried to round up some late model Nests last summer before they disappeared. F-ing Google.

So I guess I'll ask a stupid home owner question. Do smoke detectors wear out? We have the same ones from when we built our house 21 years ago and I've never even thought about replacing them.

They don’t really “wear out” but the sensors get dust and debris built up on them over the years. I’m sure if the components got cleaned, it would work totally fine, but that just doesn’t make sense to do

the sensors decay over the years and become less sensitive.
