Agree with the mesh systems if you are going to replace. Routers do not really degrade but the standards do change. We went from g to n to ac and now ax. If the router is older it may not output the standard that a new device can take advantage of. Also I think the new routers do blast more signal but as frequencies rise the interference can be more of an issue. A cheap fix can be an extender. I have used a netgear extender or repeater with some success. This is kind of a band aid fix but it may solve the problem for now.
