Should McKay Start?

Am I the only one who's frustrated with Jones? I almost think McKay should start over him. A starting five of Morris, Long, Hogue, Niang, and McKay would be deadly in my opinion. I don't really understand why Mckay and Niang don't play at the same time very much. With Niang's passing ability and McKay's ability to finish I think Iowa State would start games a lot better. McKay also is a great defender and can help prevent the awful starts like what happened in the Baylor game. It seemed like as soon as McKay came in Baylor's offense slowed down and Iowa State started coming back. I know I shouldn't turn on Jones so fast but I feel like McKay is playing better at this point. That could change though and I trust Hoiberg's decision making.

Stupid. BDJ has been probably the second best starter through this stretch. He hasn't scored a ton, but he has played well in other parts of the game.

OP seemed to have been level-headed, but still no. Tyrus was one of the best five players when he was here, correct? He led the conference in 3pt shooting so I would say it's not really a question he was one of the top five guys on the team. That said, Tyrus was probably better off the bench because he could come in the game with tons of energy right when the other team was getting tired. He was the ultimate heat check guy.

Obviously McKay's role is different but it's the same principle; come off the bench and take advantage of the other team by using his energy/athleticism. I like McKay off the bench and I just don't think there's a reason to bench Hogue or anybody else in the starting lineup.

I would't say he's the second best starter. Hogue played quite a bit better than BDJ in the South Carolina, Oklahoma State, and West Virginia games. I think McKay is good enough to start but I just don't know who he should start over. I just think since Hogue has been playing better than BDJ except in the Baylor game, I don't know if McKay should start over him.

I don't disagree with you that McKay should start, but BDJ is not the one that should be going to the bench. I think it has to be Hogue or Naz. Personally I think it should be Naz. I just think he is the one person that really fits the 6 man role.

IMHO, we should stay with our regular lineup. After seeing McKay for a few games, I feel he is more of a finesse type player. Very athletic and very high energy, a great guy to come off the bench. Also seems as though we clog the middle on offense and shrink the court for Niang when he is in. I'll defer to our coach on this decision.

Then there is no difference between the roles of Matt Thomas and Naz. I think it makes more sense to have Naz in the lineup.

You do that and you have zero pure shooters on the floor to start, teams would just pack the lane on us and live with bdj, Morris or Niang hitting a 3.

You realize ISU started off down 1-16 on Wednesday? And your conclusion is we need bench energy?

That's the only time all year we've had such a horrible start. But hey, if one bad start AS A TEAM is enough to make you think we need to bench Hogue or Naz or BDJ, I can't help you.

You make a good argument. I overreacted to that one poor start. That being said, energy at the start (especially on the road) is important. McKay is a really, really good player. I also think Hogue is better when he starts at the 3. It is exhausting to play inside when you are small, and I think he seems to play better when ISU doesn't rely on him to play inside. I'd sit Naz.

I retract my statement about BDJ earlier in this thread. He really showed up to play today and it's great to see.

Mckay changed the game. I love his current role off the bench.
